If someone commits suicide and they are saved, will they remain saved? This is a real friend of a family I know, please be kind and not flippant about this. Just trying to get some ideas.

:oRemember: This is a real Family that is really suffering!

This person believed in Jesus already and accepted him as Lord but maybe fell into sin, or depression for some reason or another such as:

Drugs
Mental Illness
Relationships gone bad
Losing a Good Job
Losing everything they had due to the Recession

or
whatever...

Important

:oWill God forgive them for killing themselves and still consider them saved?

Important

:oAre there any real comforting passages from the Holy Word that would help their families out with their grief?

I searched the Forum and did not see this topic yet, forgive me if this topic has already been posted
somewhere, but please pray for this Family (they are real close and enduring much hardship).

Please Quote from the Holy Bible, any translation - need those verses!

Thanks All

There is no reason to conclude that God is more offended by suicide than any other sin.
I agree. If the question is presuming they are truly saved, then there is no reason to believe they would not be forgiven for the sin of suicide.

Sure, if they are one of God's elect, they are saved regardless, but it would be a terrible testimony for that one, one I would hope God would not suffer to His Child. I dont recall any believer in scripture doing it, King Saul did, but he may not have been a believer or an elect..

I agree with the posts you have gotten, God looks at the heart, and that vision sees God's riches, Christ's righteousness when we are believers. There is nothing to suggest that any of that changes with suicide.

I know several people who have suicide somewhere in thier life journeys, it is devastating to say the least. Personally the closest suicide in my life is my husbands grandfather before we were married. Apart from that it has all been with friends, but in June, our son died in a swimming accident, a passage we found incredibly comforting, though it may sound silly, and one that I suggest would be comforting to someone dealing with a suicide issue, is Romans 8:38-39... For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

May you be of great comfort to this family, may our Lord comfort them in this pain. May they find in our Lord peace in the midst of this raging storm, and joy in the midst of this unimaginable sorrow.

It doesn't matter if one kills himself. What matters is if the person repented.

As harsh as this sounds, repentance leading to death means it is worldly, not godly. "Godly suicide" is when one commits his life to God and asks Him to take it.
So under this model if the person commits suicide quickly, there's less of a chance for God to save him?

Chance? There is no chance for God. It's up to God to decide.

God is a understanding God, right? Even if one commits suicide, it doesn't mean the person is surely going to hell.

I'm just saying that there's a pattern. One who ultimately dies in such a manner has undoubtedly not repented genuinely.

Luke 13 "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

2 Cor. 7:10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.

Matt. 27:3 Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

Matt. 26:75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, " Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly.

What's the difference here?

Judas didn't know Jesus. He just thought of Him as a innocent man (Matt. 27:4).

Peter knew Jesus. He thought of Him as the Christ, the Son of God.

I think that if a family member had gone to be with the Lord, the Holy Spirit should give confirmation and peace to the family that they're with the Lord. I know of a sister who's dad (a believer) died, not by suicide, but natural causes. She had the peace of the Spirit that her dad indeed had gone to heaven. I know for sure that God already knows how long each of us are going to live and how were going to die. Nothing takes him by surprise, even if it's by suicide. If God saves someone, and He already knows they will take their lives in the future, and He saves them anyway, there's hope.

I don't think so. You've said someone must repent -- if that's a valid criterion, God's making decisions based on that valid criterion.

God is indeed an understanding God, which is why I don't think He's looking at that -- which I'll explain in context.

I doubt there's a strong pattern here.
Luke 13 "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

2 Cor. 7:10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.

OK, but this is a repentance, not repentance from every single sin. How can you repent of sins you're blind to? And so because no one perfectly understands their sin, everyone would be incapable of repenting perfectly. And so no one is saved.
What's the difference here?

Judas didn't know Jesus. He just thought of Him as a innocent man (Matt. 27:4).

Peter knew Jesus. He thought of Him as the Christ, the Son of God.
The difference of course is Jesus knowing them, indwelling them, doing His work of salvation in their lives, and justifying them while despising the sin and cleansing His people from their sin.

How can God forgive us when we are not alive to ask for it. IF this was possible anyone could get this forgiveness. Also Gods command was to love one another as yourself. The YOURSELF is often over looked but very important. If one takes there life would it be considered how one treats another. Its a rather tough a depressing topic but we have to deal with it. As for doing it becasue of mental illness that i would not be able to say. would have to know the mental illness and how it accured. But the others you make life choices you have to deal with them. you reap what you sow they say. God says there is nothing impossible for Him. To me committing suicide tells Him there is. But sorry for the loss. Trying to explain such a thing to someone with this type of a loss would be VERY hard.

has it never occured to you that God can do all things (good) which includes forgiving when somenone cannot ask for it ?

God's love is greater than man's and many humans know how to forgive without experiencing remorse or anything from a sinner , in fact , remind me when are we to turn the other cheek ? when the guy abusing us does the same ?

God can forgive anyone at anytime because He has sufficient reason to do so.

"all sins shall be forgiven men except the sin against the Holy Spirit "

So no conseguences for your actions. God has mercy YES but he has laws as well. He has judgment etc etc. I didnt
say in every circumstance of suicide. Bet i would say in most the person isnt saved to start with. And to say one is saved or not isnt our call anyways. So I just brought up points to consider. Scripture says God doesnt place more on us then we can bear. Isnt one who is saved saying he does If he commits suicide. You DONT have to answer this but its there non the less.

sure there are consequences for our actions even after being forgiven.

you really need to understand something about a person intent upon ending it all ; they are not thinking straight , they are not in their right mind , they are consumed by something so dark that escape seems the only answer ..... so simple questions do not help answer the question because you are not dealing with a regular scenario.

It so grieves me that we even need these discussions. How many times do we sin? How many of us if we died this moment, would die with an unconfessed sin? Even after we come to Christ, we sometimes sin, that is why God is the judge, not us. That said, I find absolutely nothing in scripture to question the salvation of someone who commits suicide, any more than I would question the salvation of someone who lusted after they were saved, told a lie, stole a cookie off the table, failed to love someone etc., and then died that moment from a heart attack or being hit by a car. Life happens and when we come to Christ, it is our heart that is judged by God...

May all who know the pains of suicide find comfort in the arms of our Lord.
