  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So if I live in Holland does that mean Its OK to smoke weed from a Christian perspective?

Im wanting views and also yes fully admit trying to justify me smoking it. In short I gave it up 6 years ago when Jesus touched my life and I was radically transformed. Of all the drugs & alcohol, weed was the hardest as its around me with family and friends all the time. Im the only Christian amoung my family and friends. Anyway, 6 years on and I've started smoking it again. I believe I have a great reletionship with God and this hasnt stopped me seeking and praying. Although many would agrue if I did have a reletionship then WHY did I go back to smoking.

Im really keen to hear from Christians who have smoked weed, given up, and never looked back. Is it possible? I certainly thought so until 5 months ago when depression hit hard and I turned to weed to cope. Depression of being a single mum for 14 years (my sons entire life) the start of pre-teens and not having alot of support. I cant go to my church as I feel to ashamed. Hence why I joined this forum. And I cant go to my family & friends as they are were I used to be and there answer to everything is get high, get drunk....... AND yes I have been taking it to God but man its soo hard to give up.

Thank you for reading

Sugar and Cigarettes are legal and they suck. Pot is all kinds of bad. I know I will anger people by saying that. You could smoke in moderation but then it alters your brain chemistry. I know because I am addicted to sugar...I'm a sugar hound. I try to break it but can't. Yet it is legal and people encourage it around me. Pot is your comfort, you said it yourself. You are also addicted to it as you said you can't give it up. Think about it.

In addition: don't follow the standard of Holland. This is a country where pedophiles have all kinds of rights and liberties. They let the prisoners out of jail on the weekend. Don't follow their example. They have a red light district.

I believe the scriptures make it quite clear that doing drugs and getting high on pot is not what a Christian should be doing and is sinful.

I'll explain why that is...

First of all, our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit, we need to honour our body which is in fact not ours to abuse, it belongs to Christ who bought it with his own blood.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

The question is, is it righteous or unrighteous to smoke pot?

I think the obvious answer is unrighteous.

Romans 6:13
Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.

..................................................................................

The bible tells us in many, many places that we ought to be sober minded.

1 Peter 4:7
The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.

You are not clear minded when your smoking pot.

..................................................................................

Nature itself tells you the smoking pot is not something God wants you to be doing because of your body's reaction to it, tremors, paranoia etc, it isn't natural.

..................................................................................

I'm sorry to hear your depressed but don't let Satan trick you into thinking that is a reason to sin, because that is exactly what he does.

1 peter 5:8
Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

Look at that, another scripture telling up to be self-controlled and alert, something you cannot be when doing drugs.

But moving on, I really think you should try meeting new Christian friends. Start going to Church, don't let Satan think you will be unwelcome.

We have all sinned at the end of the day, no-one should be making you feel awkward because they are no different to you in that sense.

Well I hope this answers you question.

God bless and try to stay prayerful, God is only too willing to help you if you genuinely ask him and if you sincerely want to fight against this desire.

Hebrews 2:18
Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Please don't stop attending church because of this.
These are the times when you actually do need God the most.

Go to Him Just as you are, and allow His grace to help you to achieve godly living. God's grace doesn't end at salvation only but also suffices for our godly living.

P.M me if you want me to send you a link to a blog post of mine that explains this a bit more.

Firstly, I do appreciate your honesty.

however from your intial post, I can see already that it is a damaging substance.

when depression hit, you turned to weed to cope.
You should really be seeking God (holy spirit particularly)

I would say to look for another church where they are not judgemental.

This habit of yours (pot) will lead you back to your old friends and family.

as you're aware you need support and community, and a good church is where you will find that.

Here is a terrific article I found on the internet written by an unknown author:

Pot, weed, grass, ganja and skunk, are some of the common words used to describe the dried leaves drug known as marijuana. Marijuana is a cannabis plant that is "usually smoked or eaten to entice euphoria." Throughout the years, there has been research on the negative and positive effects of marijuana on the human body and the brain. Marijuana is frequently beneficial to the treatment of AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, and chronic pain. However, researchers such as Jacques-Joseph Moreau have been working to explain how marijuana has harmful affects on the functions of central nervous system and hinders the memory and movement of the user's brain. The focus of this article will be how the chemicals in marijuana, specifically cannabinoids and THC have an effect on the memory and emotions of a person's central nervous system.

Marijuana impinges on the central nervous system by attaching to brain's neurons and interfering with normal communication between the neurons. These nerves respond by altering their initial behavior. For example, if a nerve is suppose to assist one in retrieving short-term memory, cannabinoids receptors make them do the opposite. So if one has to remember what he did five minutes ago, after smoking a high dose of marijuana, he has trouble. Marijuana plant contains 400 chemicals and 60 of them are cannabinoids, which are psychoactive compounds that are produced inside the body after cannabis is metabolized or is extorted from the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids is an active ingredient of marijuana. The most psychoactive cannabinoids chemical in marijuana that has the biggest impact on the brain is tetrahydrocannibol, or THC. THC is the main active ingredient in marijuana because it affects the brain by binding to and activating specific receptors, known as cannabinoid receptors. "These receptors control memory, thought, concentration, time and depth, and coordinated movement. THC also affects the production, release or re-uptake (a regulating mechanism) of various neurotransmitters." Neurotransmitters are chemical messenger molecules that carry signals between neurons. Some of these affects are personality disturbances, depression and chronic anxiety. Psychiatrists who treat schizophrenic patient advice them to not use this drug because marijuana can trigger severe mental disturbances and cause a relapse.

When one's memory is affected by high dose of marijuana, short-term memory is the first to be triggered. Marijuana's damage to short-term memory occurs because THC alters the way in which information is processed by the hippocampus, a brain area responsible for memory formation. "One region of the brain that contains a lot of THC receptors is the hippocampus, which processes memory." Hippocampus is the part of the brain that is important for memory, learning, and the integration of sensory experiences with emotions and motivation. It also converts information into short-term memory. "Because it is a steroid, THC acts on the hippocampus and inhibits memory retrieval."THC also alters the way in which sensory information is interpreted. "When THC attaches to receptors in the hippocampus, it weakness the short-term memory,"and damages the nerve cells by creating structural changes to the hippocampus region of the brain. When a user has a high dose of marijuana, new information does not register into their brain and this may be lost from memory and they are not able to retrieve new information for more than a few minutes. There is also a decrease in the activity of nerve cells.

There are two types of memory behavior that is affected by marijuana, recognition memory and free cells. Recognition memory is the ability to recognize correct words. Users can usually recognize words that they previous saw before smoking but claim to recognize words that they did not previously see before smoking. This mistake is known as memory intrusions. Memory intrusions are also the consequence of THC affecting the free cell of the brain. "Marijuana disrupts the ability to freely recall words from a list that has been presented to an intoxicated subject."For example, if a list of vocabulary words presented to the intoxicated subject and few minutes later, they have to recall the words that were on the list. The only words that they remember are the last group of words and not the words that are in the beginning of the list. This is an initiation that their memory storage has been affected. "The absence of an effect at short term delay times indicates that cannabinodis did not impair the ability to perform the basic task, but instead produce a selective learning and/or memory deficit." A study was conducted with two college students (Student A and Student B) who both smoke marijuana every other week. This particular study was done an hour before, while and after they were under the influence of the drug. Student A was watching television before she smoked marijuana, was asked which advertisement was splayed before the show started and she got four out of five of her answers correct. After this first section, she smoked a small dose of marijuana twice within an hour. Fifteen minutes after she smoked her last blunt, she continued her regular activity of watching sitcoms. When a commercial would come on, she was asked simple questions like what happened before the show went to a commercial break. Her responses were macro-answers about what was going on but when she was asked what the main character was wearing, she did not remember. This was ironic because the protagonist wore a bright yellow suit that this individual commented on earlier when the show began ten minutes ago. Her short-term memory weakened because she was only able to remember big picture information and not small picture.

Marijuana also impairs emotions. When smoking marijuana, the user may have uncontrollable laughter one minute and paranoia the next. This instant change in emotions has to do with the way that THC affects the brain's limbic system. The limbic system is another region of the brain that governs one's behavior and emotions. It also "coordinates activities between the visceral base-brain and the rest of the nervous system."

Students B was an articulate and well spoken young woman who has a troublesome relationship with her best friends which gets her upset and causes her to become stressed. However after she smoked one high dose weed, her body was relaxed but she had trouble formulating her thoughts clearly and would talk in pieces while becoming extremely jubilant. It has been determined that a person needs to have high dose of marijuana to remain in the state of euphoria. High dose of marijuana, measured as "15mg of THC, can cause increased heart rate, severe motor disturbances, and can lead to panic attacks."Thankfully, Student A did not experience any of these extreme examples.

College students usually smoke marijuana because they are stressed over schoolwork and feel that marijuana can help them unwind. The effects of happiness that marijuana usually cause to the user is not a lasting effect because even though a user smokes weed to get away from the troubles of his/her own life, they still have to face these problems after the effects of the drug wears-off. In a survey with college student found that "compared to the light users, heavy marijuana users made more errors and had more difficulty sustaining attention.".

The chemicals in marijuana bring cognitive impairment and troubles with learning for the user. "Smoking marijuana causes some changes in the brain that are like those caused by cocaine, heroin, and alcohol. Some researchers believe that has changes may put a person more at risk of becoming addicted to other drugs such a cocaine and heroin." To prevent such harm, one must be cautious of their actions. Those who do not do drugs do not risk harm. So please the next day you light up, remember that you central nervous system and brain will be at risk.

Now you can see why this verse is so relevant:

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

You said you turned to weed to cope - but truly weed is a very temporary coping device isn't it? The only one you can turn to who will help you cope permanently is God. God should be the one you turn to to help you cope with the frustrations of life. I don't doubt you know this.

I know people are up on how its a harmful substance, and they are absolutely right.
However it has been proved that cigarettes and smoking and breathing in chemicals such as nicotine and tar to be more harmful then the pot plant you grew yourself, dried and are now smoking.

Just like alcohol, pot can, obviously, alter your perception. So it would have to be used veeeery carefully, if you wanted to at all.

We have around here something called "Hookah Bars" or "Shisha Bars" . . .a hookah is a large water pipe (think what the Caterpillar has in Alice in wonderland) and Shisha is a mix of flavored plants mixed with molasses for sweetener, it can either come with tobacco or without.
And you smoke it! Now this stuff won't alter your perception, which is why its legal I assume, but technically it's not good for you.
Like too much alcohol isn't good for you.
Like sugar isn't good for you, or trans fats, or palm oil or salt..BUT! we do it anyway.

Now hubs and I own a hookah, as do our siblings - and every so often we have a hookah party, make nice tea and smoke some coconut/grape/apple shisha.

I'm not encouraging you to go back to pot - but I do think you're making a bigger deal out of this than it is. :)
Go to church, worship God - you are not doing anything illegal, and just like you'd give up alcohol because its bad for you, give up pot.
If you continue to smoke, do it in moderation and always be safe.

In genisis, God says we are to use all the seeds and things of the earth of which pot is one. Pot is probably better for you than refined sugar or cigerettes becuase thoes 2 products are modified with chemicals. That being said, pot is expensive (unless you grow it), I can think of alot better things to do with my money that relax's me. About the only scripture you could use against it is the "laws of the land" scriputre but pot is legal in some states up to certian amounts, but illegal with the feds so its a grey area.

Take the money you would spend on pot and start a degree program, learn to fly, some hobbie. If you really want to smoke it then move to a state where its legal or at the very least not enforced and grow a plant or 2, that way you are not shelling out for it, learning to grow it could be a hobbie all itself, it is a weed so it should nto be to hard.

What is the point of smoking something if its bad for you but does not have a positive effect like pot does.

It's not defined that we are to use it for smoking, janman.

Genesis 1:30
I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.

Last time I checked, when you eat something it goes in the stomach to digest - not the lungs.

Good call, its probably better to make pot brownies anyways that way you dont get the lung damage. And make the brownies with truvia so that you dont have the added calories.

Would pot brownies in a small amount get someone high?

I know hemp has a lot of uses (including really good fuel - hempoline) and I really wish the govt would realize it's industrial and you can't really get high off of it (people have tried).

There has been some great answers and insights from various perspectives. I can only add that pot will affect different people (emotionally) in different ways. On the whole however, it is usually an introspective experience and as such can be both illuminating and limiting. In other words it can only take you so far and then becomes a hindrance to your life journey and your relationship with God.

You probably know some people who you think smoke it too much. Look at how that affects them; non motivated, uninvolved, lazy, etc. This may be fine once in a great while, but if it is a life style you can see it is obviously counter productive. Also as others have pointed out, once you feel you need to get high to be happy, you have issues that need to be addressed and with pot you are only looking at a temporary fix. (No pun intended :))

You have an advantage many people locked in this cycle don't; you are a Christian. God is there waiting to help you, take his hand.

Did you miss the part when she says she uses it to cope with depression and is addicted to it?

Her depression is circumstantial and the pot is better than the phycotropic drugs a shrink will prescribe. These circumstances are derived from poverty, lack of education, lack of good job opprotunities, social factors that prevent men from wanting to be involved with kids. Men dont want a single mom because they know they will always come in second to the kid most guys simply dont want to deal with that, where as if it were their own kid the kid would come second for the sake of the relationship, however, that has its own set of paranoias with child support if she misbehaves towards him.

People dont realize the tangled web society has weaved and some people find themselves at the wrong end. It will probably take her a life time to pull out of her situation becuase once you fall off the tight rope, very few are given the opprotuinty to get back on. That does not mean you shouldent try but it will be a real challenge, priorities have to be set and if they are not the right priorities you will fall off again, sometimes the kid needs to take a back seat and you need to work on yourself (kind of like putting on your own oxygen mask before helping others), alot of people dont think things through or are not smart about what they are doing and get offended or whatever and they loose what would have been good help or advice.

You underestimate the power of God's grace.
The advice to seek God even more in this situation is more than adequate for the OP here.
