we have a poll on who is the greatest Woman in Christianity. Most have said Mary because of her roll as giving birth and raising and nuturing Christ when he was a child and her unwavering faithfullness and answering the call to God to bear to us our Savior.

But to some that doesn't seem to be good enough. So I was wondering of all those who voted NO on the pole, who is the greatest woman and why?

Thanks.

Mat 12:47 Someone said to Him, "Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside seeking to speak to You."
Mat 12:48 But Jesus answered the one who was telling Him and said, "Who is My mother and who are My brothers?"
Mat 12:49 And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, "Behold My mother and My brothers!
Mat 12:50 "For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother."

Jesus Himself did not engage in the ungodly Mary worship that some would suppose is right, and who insist it is an error to maintain a biblical perspective.

Who is the greatest woman? My mother, my bride, any one of countless of godly women who walk in obedience to sound doctrine.

So can we count this as the reason you voted a No to the poll boswd is referring to here?

I think you are taking out of context of what Christ was saying, it[s purpose wasn't to show he had no respect for his mother but that we are all brother's and sisters.

But I'm getting the feeling your vote is really based on the view Catholics, Orthodox and some Anglican's have of Mary.
Just seems that way

I did not say he disrespected his mother. He kept her in the proper and honorable place without engaging in anything more. He did not elevate her as the ungodly practices of the Mary worshippers do. That was my point in posting the passage. There were those that wished He would stop what He was doing and go to Mary and His brothers. He did not do that.

This thread, and your poll, is based on the doctrines of a few denominations in regards to Mary, which I am firmly against based on biblical study.

Remembering and honoring Mary is all we do. No worshipping. This is the part, mont, that I hope you will understand one day. We remember all those who have had special places in Christian history, i.e. the martyrs throughout the centuries. These people are a testament to God, showing God's grace in these people. Mary being the first and top person in giving birth to God. She is a human being who served God greatly and she is the MOther of our Savior and God. So, yes, we honor her and remember her, as every Christian should. But worship? No. Only God do we worship, for only he gets this type of praise.

Who Will Be the Greatest?
46An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. 47Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For he who is least among you all—he is the greatest.”
49“Master,” said John, “we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”
50“Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”

I understand your point and agree that God does not look at "who the greatest is" but I do believe the org. poll was done more in a jest sort of manner. Or a who do we think had the bigget roll. Basically asking our opinions of the great women throughout our Christian history.

just as people may debate who's the Greatest golfer of all time, some may say Tiger some may say Jack. Who's better Peyton Manning or Tom Brady?

sometimes we don't have to always be so legalistic on our approach to things.

interesting the lack of responses from those who voted No in the other Poll.

So I'll do a shameless bump and ask again If you do not think Mary is the greatest woman in our Christian history past or present then who is?

I actually answered that in the other thread.

Plus we each have a unique role to fill in our lives, and the role of the Theotokos was to conceive and bear the Son of God Incarnate. God specifically chose her to fill that role. Who could be a greater woman than the Theotokos?

Hello there Mont974x41 I hate to point this out to you, but in the passage you quote from ----- ------ Jesus never says that the persons outside actually ARE His Mother or brothers! It is implied but not confirmed. Jesus DOES respond to the statement, BUT HE RESPONDS BY ASKING A QUESTION! Please re-read the passage and instead of seeing what you want to believe, i.e. Jesus' mother Mary had other children, see what the passage ACTUALLY STATES! Jesus in effect denies the presence of anyone of His lineage outside the room where He is with His disciples and instead directs the original speaker in the passage to those in the room with God and points out their obedience to Him and His Commandments as their kinship with Him. This is the same thing today. We follow Christ and keep His Commandments and He adopts us and we become His brothers and sisters. The passage is about discipleship. Was Mary ever really outside that room? We don't really know, but some seize on the fact that a person who is not God says they are there to which God Himself responds with a question and answer. If Jesus' mother were actually outside the room I'm quite sure He would have responded in another way. The mention of her and the supposed brothers of God being outside is made by an outsider and if you go up in the Chapter of Matthew mentioned there you will find many other accusations AGAINST Jesus and the disciples! It wasn't a friendly environment they were resting from. No! Those outside that room were His detractors. You're whole argument hinges on the hersay evidence of someone who is 1) outside the room, 2) not a disciple and 3) quite possibly a detrctor as those others who are mentioned in the preceeding examples in the whole Chapter. Please take your time in re-reading the passage. In it you will find God answering the accusations against Him, His disciples and Mary quite sufficiently. It isn't the answer I think you're after though, at least not at this point in your spiritual journey. Perhaps someday you will be ready to see with eyes fully open. Hope so.

Peace and all good,

Gail

P.S. If you compare the passage you use to that found in St. Mark, you will find two verses up Jesus being accused of having a lying spirit by the same group of folks outside the room with the supposed brothers of the the Lord! GET IT????! Those outside the room, not disciples, are detracting from Him. Are with the those outside the room with or within? The choice is yours.

P.P.S. May I love Mary as Jesus did and does! If you consider this as ungodly Mary worship, then shame on you! God loves His Mother. That is a fact. He honored her with a crown of twelve stars. He put the moon under her feet and gave her the sun for her raiment! Has any man ever given as much to his mother than God gave to Mary? I think not.

Ok there are 19 NO's on the other poll and only two responses here.

So again if Mary isn't the greatest Christian Woman in your mind then who is and why?

Thanks
Who can say. For life still continues on and all mens works will be judged. As far as greatest amongs the women I believe we are all equal in the eyes of the Lord for We have all been saved the same way.. By Grace through Faith and the shedding of the blood of the lamb

As others have said; the Bible says "Blessed are you (referring to St. Mary the Theotokos) among women." The Holy Writ also says "all generations shall call me blessed" in the Magnificat.

Tell me...who do you know was blessed and great enough to be called to bear God in her womb?
