  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think there are a lot of situations that can lead to Mortal sin and it isn't always cut and dry. as a previous poster said, we can't see your heart, or your struggles. Keep close to God in your struggles and he will show you a way out of it.

<i>"When I'm weak, You make me strong. When I'm blind, You shine your light on me.
'Cause I'll never get by living on my own ability. </i>

In my weakness He is strong... Dave... we are ALL weak, and you might be weaker in certain areas then I am, but we are ALL "losers" and... it's only by relying on Him that we can overcome. He doesn't expect us to be perfect when we pray a certain prayer or "make the decision", He knows we will probabyly fall again and again and again, but it's getting up and choosing to try again, and HONESTLY trying not just saying we are... He can see our hearts even tho no one else can. He is the one who will never be deceived by us.

Cry out to The Lord and He will answer...

my favorite psalm says -
Psalm 51

For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

1 Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me.

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you are proved right when you speak
and justified when you judge.

5 Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts [a] ;
you teach [b] me wisdom in the inmost place.

7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones you have crushed rejoice.

9 Hide your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will turn back to you.

14 Save me from bloodguilt, O God,
the God who saves me,
and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

15 O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.

16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

17 The sacrifices of God are [c] a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise.

18 In your good pleasure make Zion prosper;
build up the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then there will be righteous sacrifices,
whole burnt offerings to delight you;
then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Dave,

I don't know where you will go, that is for God to decide. Objectively speaking, mortal sin does result in hell. I don't know how merciful God is, and His judgement is a mysterious thing.

However, you should not risk it, and should do everything possible to overcome this problem.

If you are Catholic, I would recommend frequent confession, daily examination of conscience, daily Mass attendance if possible.

Also, I would recommend fasting, you need to maintain control over your passions, and fasting is highly beneficial in this regard. Frequent prayer, always remind yourself of God's presence.

In addition, go to your priest, tell him of your struggles. Ask him if there are any support/accountability groups of which you could join, ask him for practical advice.

Consecrate yourself to Jesus through Mary, and daily pray the rosary.

Try to avoid idleness. If you are being tempted, do a selfless act, give of yourself, expend your energy in prayer and service.

Brother, I struggled with these same issues for about two years, and it was a battle. We must rely on God's grace and take the offensive. Sitting back, doing nothing, being idle, will do nothing to help you heal from this weakness, and will likely increase your dependency on this sin.

You are in my prayers, this is a serious struggle, feel free to pm me anytime.

God bless,

Brian

Pray man, don't forget to pray. Ask for strength. ASk God and he will give.

I read a verse,...i sadly cannot remember the verse but it goes something like

I f you pray and you know in your heart you will recieve it ; you have recieved it!

SO pray to God that he changes your heart, toward him. Prayer is so stong, don't take prayer lightly either!

Also, I would like to say during times of temptation. The names of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph are very powerful. Call upon them to protect you. Call upon St. Michael the Archangel to defend you in battle.

Also, an Orthodox friend of mine recommended prostrations while praying. This is repeatedly going up and down, putting your head to the ground (like Muslims do it, they actually stole it from christians by the way). While doing this pray, I like to say the following "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner."

Persevere in God's grace Dave!

Matthew 21:21Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done. 22If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."

Dave,
I am really glad you posted this. It was a really great reminder to me that sin is deathly. We can lose our souls over it and shouldn't take it lightly. Sometimes i think i take sin too lightly and this thread made me realize that. WOW! Now i am scared with you Dave! Thats a good thing.."Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (thats a scripture thats somewhere in the bible!! hmmmm

If I die in a state of mortal sin am I going to hell. I have a few weakness's. Sins of the flesh would be one of them. Sometimes I know I'm going to do wrong and I do it anyway. Its not that I'm trying to offend God, its just that its hard. If I was to go out tommorow and get hit with a car would that be it - Hell.

Okay, first you have to realize what a moral sin is, a sin which is committed under certain circumstances that you have no grace left. You knew it was wrong and you freely chose to do it anyways. "freely chose' is very difficult to determine.

Now, if following the sin you were unrepetant, refused say an act of contrition and had no plans on going to confession. If you die like that, then yeah, you are probably at risk. If you aren't wanting to go to confession for it, then you might not want to go to God, right?

If you commit a grave sin, then it may be a mortal sin. If you are sorry for it and you say an Act of Contrition and make plans on going to confession then you are doing the right thing. You are not resisting God and His grace, so why would you think if you died you would?

It is when we deny His grace in life for our sins that it follows we might do the same in the afterlife.

That is an interesting point.
Freely chose....That is why I think it is important to look at the intent of the person as well as their heart after they commit the sin. (I'm using advice that has been given to me, I am also in a situation that is scary)

Only God knows your true heart, after all, he created it.

Just to clairfy, I'm not saying that it isn't a grave matter, or something that you shouldn't be worried about, because you should, we all should. It is that fear that leads us to turn to God for help. These sort of situations make us realise that we cannot stop on our own, that we need God. If you turn to God through fear and also out of obedience, to help you through this, he will see your heart. So yes, be fearful, but don't let that fear paralyse you into doing nothing or turning further from God.

Now I'm going to go and take my own advice....

Because one of the most sad things in our times is the lack of sense of the sin.

Amen to that!
