It's not a weakness in faith issue, it's the teaching of biblical doctrine that without Christ and the gospel you go to hell, that deems the majority of mankind to hell.
When Christ said "no man comes to the father except through the son" when did it have effect, when he said it? The earth was mostly populated then, again it took 400 years after Christ said that until the gospel reached Europe, another 1000 until it reached the America's....hundreds of millions died never hearing?
Even today many haven't heard. Several of the tribes we worked with had religion, but not Christ, they were moral, but not Christian.
In one area all the missions were thrown out, the tribes became confused at the different teachings and traditions of different denominations and decided the old way was better.
The bible says Christ is the only way, but seems man has created many doctrines to try to explain away the gospel. For instance, children that die get a pass "age of accountability", so Christ isn't the only way, we have the gospel of accountability. Some declare God's creation is clear and man has no excuse, the gospel of creation, but that isn't Christ.
Others say God will be fair and work it out, have faith....so yet another gospel, the gospel of fairness or faith......It appears Christ isn't the only way.
Even in nations that have heard the gospel, most born will follow the culture and religions of parents, Islam, Buddist, Hindus, etc... Seems the gospel is more the luck of the draw where you're born.
