  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So what would be your ideal party? If you have time, list some views they would have on basic issues: abortion, homosexual marriage, gun control, ect.
And since I assume most of us think a third party would be a good thing, what do you think is holding them back? Why are we not represented at all?
I've always fantasied about making my own part so...you know.

Abortion: Basically, from what I've read, the fetus develops extremely rapidly. I think that once the child becomes recognizably human and has basic functions--nervous system, emotions--abortion should be considered murder unless the mother's life is threatened. In which case, you can usually save one--the mum--or none. So since--if I recall correctly--a fetus is no longer really a fetus by 4 weeks as it can feel and have emotions, it ought to be left alone. Before that, I don't think we can reasonably object.

Homosexual Marriage: From my vantage point, marriage is a contract between two people endorsed by the government. Though I do fully understand that for Christians marriage is entirely different, it is something sacred beyond practically any partnership on this earth. But, because of this most of them tend to hold that the government contract itself is somehow sacred, when it's not. So basically, I don't oppose gay marriage, though I would vehemently oppose any effort to get the churches to endorse or perform the ceremony or contract.
We Christians ought to accept that marriage has two very different parts: the temporal and practical, and the sacred and cosmic. We have no right to oppose someones access to the former, as long as the latter isn't brought into play.

Environment: The government has the duty to protect me from you. If you go polluting the environment, you harm me. Thus, I support government regulation of the environment where necessary.

Economy:

Fiscal Policy(or monetary forget): I think that as far as regulation of the economy goes, our government should first pursue a deflationary policy for a bit. Really, inflation is getting out of control. I also think that we should consider backing our money with something of worth; which is actually kinda what is happening now. Everyone wants the dollar to retain its value, because the dollar is the only currency in which you can buy oil. As soon as that stops--Russia and reportedly Venezuela are both considering stopping it--the dollar will experience a huge dive in value. We need something that we can keep on our shores.

Business regulation: Minimal. We ought to follow the policy of protecting me from you as in most things. The government makes a big mess with businesses. And where regulation is necessary government should first say, "You fix it yourselves, or we'll do it for you."

Anti-capitalist, pro-abortion, pro gay marriage, pro gun ownership, pro gun control, pro drug legalisation... a party that would abolish the war on drugs, lower their own salaries, enforce laws that protect the environment, make all education free, separate church from state, etc.

I'd like a party right smack in between the Constitution and Libertarian parties. Those two each have half of the issues down, and something in between, compassionate, yet willing to protect one's individual rights if necessary, is what I think would make a great political party.

So what would be your ideal party?

My ideal party would be very similar to the Libertarian Party in platform, except that it would be explicitly Objectivist or neo-Aristotelian in philosophy and values. It would not be afraid to advocate a vision of what people ought to do with their lives, and explain how its politics would be justified on that basis.

*Pro-Choice
*Puts a strong emphasis on the Bill of Rights/Constitution
*Anti-Imperialistic, Isolationist
*Strong separation of Church & State-on that note I believe that civil unions (including for gay couples) are a matter of the State while marriage is a matter which concerns the Church.
*Puts en emphasis on states' rights and a very limited federal government (I am, after all, a Southerner :D ).
*Strong defense and a strong military (again, that is the Southerner in me  )
*Strongly supports NASA and space exploration
*Firm support of the right to keep and bear arms-limited gun control laws.

I have not yet drawn any conclusions about economic policy.

My ideal party would be fiscally conservative and socially liberal.

This idea that we can deficit-spend and let the next generation take care of our debt would stop, pronto. To rectify our trade imbalance, I would very quietly institute sets of tariffs to make American goods more competitive with Asian goods. I would set about jump-starting and reinvigorating American manufacturing. I would stop the outsourcing of American jobs, plug tax loopholes for American companies who are using free trade agreements to avoid paying taxes, and cancel NAFTA and CAFTA.

America would stop playing 911 to the rest of the world. It's time for us to stop minding everybody else's business.

I would be pro-choice in the first 40 days, and restrict abortions to protecting the life of the mother, and severe fetal deformity which would result in the death of the fetus.

We would have contraception readily available to anybody who needed it.

We would have a national health care system.

I would make it very much understood that there are certain services which people want and/or use which are of benefit to society, e.g., national health care system, roads, a rail system, public transportation, water, wastewater, public health, food inspection etc. and in order to fund these things it is necessary to pay taxes. The paying of taxes to fund services everyone uses is every bit as much a national responsibility as maintaining a strong military.

I would cut WAY back on defense spending, and repriortize that spending so America would be able to defend itself; but we would not be engaging in "nation building" or pre-emptive wars.

Israel is mis-managing the money we give to it: I would give Israel the choice of being able to account for the money we give to that country or we turn off the spigot.

I would favor strong separation of church and state. If churches are going to get involved in politics and supporting political candidates, they WILL pay taxes.

Everybody (straight and gay) would be able to get a civil union with all the protections of marriage -- and this is a function of the state; and churches could marry whomever they like (or refuse to do so, for any reason they chose). Churches would stop acting as a function of the state with regards to licensing marriage.

I would legalize all drugs and all sexual behaviors between adults who are able to make informed consent, including prostitution. I would instigate purity controls on all drugs and tax them; and I would add the caveat that if property or life were damaged or destroyed while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the fact that one was under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the commission of a crime could not be used as a mitigating circumstance.

I would lower the age of consent for consensual sexual activities (both gay and straight) to 14. If people are going to have sex, then they're going to have sex, At the same time, I would mandate a four-year family training program to begin in sixth grade, including conflict resolution, child rearing, home economics, home finance, and comprehensive sex education for all children in order to make young adults better parents, to break the cycle of domestic violence, and to give young adults a choice between abstinence and no information.
