  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi everyone. I was absolutely infuriated when I learned about this European cartoon that never made it to the United States. It's called "Popetown". Basically it's a very controversial cartoon that makes fun of Catholicism and the Pope. Let's just say that they show the Pope as an infantile nincompoop as Wikipedia puts it. This "cartoon" must have been incredibly popular with the anti-Catholics! In fact, according to Wikipedia, a popular anti-Catholic Atheistic group defended the cartoon. Not that I'm surprised. Most Atheists are quite anti-religion and in particular anti-Catholic. Catholicism gets more flack from the Atheists than does any other religion in my opinion. Now I believe the Muslims come in a close second but I still don't think they get as much flack as the Catholic Church does.

I heard about this "cartoon" in another thread. I was disgusted to say the least. And take a look at how they portray the Pope:

Popetown.jpg

He's portrayed as a psychotic killer shooting a machine gun. Like the Pope would even own a gun! And even if he did own a gun, he certainly wouldn't use it in a psychotic fashion like this killer Pope does in the cartoon.

Also take a look at the cardinals behind him. They're all portrayed as evil corrupt cardinals and one is even portrayed as having as severe deformity. Not that having a deformity is a bad thing but it just shows how disrespectful they are being that they have to portray the cardinals as somehow being "inferior" to the rest of society. Not saying that hunch back (sorry, I don't know the actual medical term) people are inferior but that is the implication that they give.

The only good character in the cartoon is the priest who is the Pope's "protector" named Fr. Nicholas. In the cartoon, he actually tries to live a devout life. However, they do show the two of them together in the bathtub though fully clothed. For one thing, (and yes I know it's a cartoon but I still hate this) the Pope would never allow someone else to bathe him unless he was totally incapable of doing it himself and for another, people don't bathe with their clothes on! Not that I'd like to see them portrayed as being "naked" in the cartoon. That would make it even worse. You see, this cartoon just can't make me happy. ;)

I also saw a clip on Youtube where a priest or a cardinal or someone flicks a piece of something out of his mouth and into a pile of "magical" hosts. They are quite obviously Eucharistic hosts as they are round and white. What else could they be? I don't doubt one bit in my mind that the idiots who came up with this cartoon were trying to get the point across that the Eucharist is some kind of "magic" idiocy thing.

Oh and that's not all that this cartoon shows. This cartoon shows some visitor to the Vatican who is apparently an evil dictator (he's dressed like a Nazi or something), whose wife chooses to slobber all over the Pope's ring for several seconds, and the evil dictator opens fire on the visitor's room in the Vatican just because someone served some kind of roasted animal for the dinner (I'm assuming it was a panda because the dictator talks about how he is a "conservationist" who has a panda reserve or something). Like as though anyone ever eats panda unless they are starving!

Oh and that isn't even where it ends. In one of the episodes, they portray a priest as a sexual deviant according to Wikipedia. Of course they'd have to make that cheap shot against the Church!

Thankfully, Jewish, Christian Evangelicals, and even Muslims were opposed to the show at least in Germany. I was shocked about that. I never dreamed in my life that Jews and Muslims would stand up for the Catholic Church as I always thought they were anti-Catholic too. Now, I can see some evangelicals doing that but not many. Too many evangelicals think we're not even Christian. Don't believe me? I know, I used to be an evangelical and a fundamentalist at one time as well.

This isn't the only time that Catholicism or Jesus has been made fun of by cartoonists. There was at least one episode of South Park and I think one of the Simpsons and of Family Guy (or some other show, I don't keep up to date on them that well) where Catholicism in particular was made fun of. I know that they made fun of Jesus in South Park one time as I saw that episode. My best friend rented it at a movie store and told me I should watch it. I reluctantly watched it with him.

But yeah, my point is that the Catholic Church is routinely made fun of, criticized, and bigotedly ridiculed by anti-Catholics. This, my friends, is proof that the Catholic Church is the one true Church. Not that I encourage such disgusting anti-Catholicism though. ;)

Anyway, here's some links:

Popetown - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That's all I can find right now. Anyway, here's some pictures with my commentary:

popetown_wideweb__470x279,0.jpg

Note how the Pope is displayed as a legless, immature, infantile, idiot who gets his thrills with a pogo stick. Notice also the bug eyed priest (and the Pope and nun). The priest is Fr. Nicholas.

Popetown_051121045034231_wideweb__300x375,1.jpg
Notice the evil looking grin on the Pope's face.

Popetown.jpg

Ok, "The Pope is Brilliant"... why yes he is but I seriously doubt that the Vatican building really says that on it. Again, notice the sly, evil looking grin on the Pope and on the cardinals.

popetown.jpg

The Pope as a psychotic evil killer.

And that's all I have time to post for now. I would have showed you the German cover of a DVD or something for it but if I did, I'd likely get banned. If you want to find it, do a Google image search for "Popetown" and it comes up on the first page. But beware, it's very disgusting. It's far worse than any images I have shown.

So, what's your view of this movie? Disgusted? Not so good? Like it? Love it? Vote in my poll where the scale is 1-10 1 being it's horrible and 10 being it's wonderful.

Note that anybody can vote in this poll, even non-Catholics. I only ask that you be sporting a visible Christian icon (must be visible so I can actually tell that you are Christian... either that or say that you are Christian in your post). Debate is open to Catholics only. Non-Catholic Christians can feel free to post in this thread and to post your opinions of it so long as you don't say anything hateful (about Catholics, not the movie. Seriously, you can say all the hateful stuff about the show that you want ;) ). I would prefer that non-Christians not post in here but if you do, you must abide by the strict no debating rule for non-Catholics, you must not post anything hateful, and you cannot criticize the Church either.

I think number 1 would suffice for that. ;)
It's so stupid that I don't see how anyone with a brain can believe that the Pope is like this. So, I'm not really that upset with it. It's just stupid.

I agree with you. But "stupid" can easily be a synonym of some sort for the words I used in the poll.

Jesus said that the world would hate us just as they hated him.

So, we should expect this.

Yep. This is true. Doesn't mean we have to tolerate it though. ;)

They want to get a reaction out of people. They want us to feel horrified by it, but it's too stupid to be horrified by it. It looks like the ones who made this are projecting the way they are onto the Pope and the Catholic Church.

Yeah you're right. Anyway, I think we have a right to be horrified by this garbage. The animation is atrocious and the voice of the Pope is downright annoying! :p

Sin makes you stupid. I voted neutral because I think Popetown is a good nickname for Vatican City. Like Popemobile.

The poll is not about the name of the cartoon. It's about the cartoon itself. Please don't skew my poll results like this in the future.

Humour about religion can go two ways.

If it is actually funny, it means that it has some truth to it. In which case I am not inclined to complain about it. The absurdities of religion, even my own, are fair game.

On the other hand, if it isn't funny, it is because it isn't true - either it is a straw man that is being attacked, or the supposed absurdity isn''t absurd. In which case I would not be offended either, though perhaps sad that someone was so misled.

I doubt this show would appeal to me. But I wouldn't say that the things that bothered you would bother me. Just becausse the Pope would not really do something would not in itself make it inappropriatee for a comedic depiction. Humour often uses situations where things are exaggerated to extremes, or put into a strange context. Monty Python is a good example - lots of their depictions of religious officials are over the top, but they are (to me) quite funny.
