• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I want to quit, but I like to do it.

It's so engrained in my daily life...smoke breaks at work, smoke after a meal, smoke after cleaning...having something in my hands.

I can't afford ANY nicotine products to help quit, but my addiction is MORE about the habit and oral fixation then the nicotine. I can't chew gum due to teeth issues.

Anyone have any tips to fix the oral fixation?

find something else to replace the oral fixation that cigarettes satisfy. I know you can't chew gum, but find something else that you can do during the times that you smoke. Sunflower seeds were a big help for me, and gum (sorry). Aside from replacing that oral fixation, my advice is to take time to work on your mindset rather than "sommething else to put in your mouth."

I quit only 2 1/2 days ago, but i'm going strong. the cravings are still there, and yes at those "certain" times as you mentioned, the cravings are the worst. For the longest time I've known I "need" to quit, but simply haven't "wanted" to quit, because I like it so much. The best solution for me was to really analyze what i'm doing to my lungs each puff I take (and I kept remembering that picture of the black lung from the doctors office, that helped...). Take time to work on your mindset and when you're ready, the task of quitting will still be difficult, but more manageable, with the right mindset.

I didn't even plan to quit really. Mid-day the other day, I just was like, "i'm not going to go buy any more cigarettes." I still haven't (knock on wood).

dawnsday,

I see you live in America. Call your local health department. Most health departments in the U.S. will send you kits to help stop smoking (for free) including nicotine patches, stress ball, and other useful things and tips. Talk to a counselor at the health department for additional tips.
I used to smoke. It's been about 4 years since I finally quit. It took 7 times trying. So don't give up. I still crave them occasionally, but, I won't go back.
I don't know you might also try cinnamon toothpicks, lollipops, take up knitting... The sunflower seeds is a good idea as there is something in them that has helped others quit or so I have heard.
You can do this... keep trying!!

yep, like previous post mentioned, seek help from others. and also, do not feel like i total let down if you fail your first, second, or third time. Lets face its, a vast majority of people that quit successfully, didn't do it on their very first try! i smoked a pack a day for only about 4 months, i can't imagine trying to quit after smoking for like 20 years, as some of these people have. But best of luck and i wish you success in quiting. Words of encouragement: I recently quit, and i feel amazing! Only after one/two weeks of not having cigarettes, i feel completely different.

my biggest thing is that i stay with my mom who is a smoker, who just got her lungs scanned and they looked clean so she just thinks it's not a big deal and the whole "cigs kill" thing is bogus.

when i'm around non-smokers, my manners beat out my addiction and I don't smoke...

I am praying for you. :)

If I were you I would buy something else. That's not easy, I know, it's hard to quit. But people are affected by it. My grandmother smoked and I never knew this but anyways she died of lung cancer and I cried all night. I sometimes get mad at her for not letting me know, although she was only trying to keep me from it. But away from my problems and on with yours: I believe it's kinda selfish of you to not give this up because although many who smoke may not die of lung cancer, the risks are high, and it will hurt you and everyone who knows you. I know you say you already want to quit but I'm hoping these facts will officially make up your mind. It's simple: don't buy anymore. Sometimes I wish I could ban all cigarette stores.

Praying 4 ya,
Grace

I have been in your shoes. But you figure you are spending $3-$4 on a box of cigarettes save that money for 10 days and you have the nicotine kits to quit smoking. You have to find something to occupy your time. The key for me was GUM winterfresh gum at that!! It still works I have not smoked in 6 or 7 months and I am strong no more cravings nothing! Good luck
