In many churches, God is understood as confessed to in the Nicene Creed: The Nicene Creed - Personal and Devotional Prayers - Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America In the Old Testament, before Christ, God gave commandments to Moses. Primary areas these are found in Deuteronomy 5, Deuteronomy 6, Leviticus 19. Even to those who did not specifically know God, commandments of right & wrong were given to man’s conscience ( see Genesis 9, Ezekiel 18:4-9, Psalms 15 etc.). Many detailed commandments were given specific to the Jews other than these ( for ex. Leviticus 16). While some people were doing human sacrifice, the Jews offered animals. I think the book of Ecclesiastes ( Ecclesiastes 1 etc.) is a good bridge between the Testaments. As others have said, the Gospel of John is the best to know Jesus Christ as the Son of God the Father & yet also God. ( John 1 etc.). The best Gospel chapters on the ministry of Jesus Christ are Matthew 5, Matthew 6, Matthew 7 ( sermon on the Mount). The commandments of Jesus are focused on in Matthew 22:36-40, Matthew 7:1-12 with focus on Matthew 7:12, Matthew 19:16-19, Mark 10:1-15 etc. A good summation of Christianity is given in Colossians 1. One major way St. Paul shows us how to receive Jesus as our savior can be found in Romans 10:9-13.
