  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It varies from co-op to co-op. One that we went to had everyone doing the same curriculum...it was the most school-like. The others have been geared towards supplementing whatever we're doing at home...science, karate, creative writing, art, arts & crafts- of all kinds, Spanish, pre-k and kindergarten stuff for the wee kiddos, geography, co-operative games, chorus, music appreciation. You know, that kind of stuff.

That's a better fit for us, because I don't want to be locked into the pressure of a pre-built curriculum. It makes me stressed and grumpy.

One of the co-ops that we're in even was going to have a "Your body and You" class for girls...just informative...the person facilitating it is a seasoned LLL leader and was going to include info on how breasts work and develop, I was going to talk about how babies grow, another mom was going to talk about change during puberty. However there was a mom who felt uncomfortable with it- so rather than have her child be the only one not included--we decided upon doing a class on the systems of the body--digestive, nervous, endocrine, etc.

Have you considered magnet schools, umbrella schools, or Montessori schools?
Rachel
we have a montessori school nearby that goes from pre-k through 8th grade and i would LOVE to send my kids to it, but unfortunately the tuition is more than TWICE that of the Christian school.

Yes, they are expensive. I know the one closest to here is, anyway :)

As a homeschooling mom, I've checked into the resources around here and believe homeschooling is best for our family . . . that doesn't mean it will work well for everyone :D But I am familiar with some of the options available . . . do you live near a larger city?

I've never heard of magnet schools or umbrella schools. The montesorri school is just as far away as the Waldorf school so that isn't an option. There are plenty of them for prek but we are past that with one and the other wants to do it at home. I'm ok with that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnet_school
A magnet school is a public school which offers specialized courses or curricula. The term magnet school is mostly associated with the United States, although other countries have similar types of schools (such as UK specialist schools).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umbrella_school
An umbrella school is an alternative education school which serves to oversee the homeschooling of children to fulfil government educational requirements.
I only copied the very basic first definition given in these pages . . . the links should be useful to anyone interested :)
