If is illegal in, say, Alabama, for someone to shoot a, say, posess a kangaroo hide, but perfectly legal in, say, Illinois, is it then illegal for a seller in Alabama to sell and ship the kangaroo hide to a buyer in Illinois?

Those are questions that a lawyer would have to sort out. The only animal product, that I know of, that is illegal to sell or posess anywhere in the world is ivory.

I'm pretty sure Kangaroo is fine. I've seen Kangaroo leather boots for sale at many places.

The only hides I know of which are illegal are tiger, leopard, cheetah, jaguar, or any exotic cat skin with stripes or spots. Lion is ok, since it doesn't have stripes or spots. Zebra is ok, it is not a cat.

Probably clear as mud now. But that is all I can think of.

Actually, pre-ban ivory is legal to own. You cannot import it now. But ivory which was imported before the ban can still be legally bought and sold.

Kangaroo hide is legal depending on what state you are in. For instance it is illegal to ship kangaroo hide hunting boots to California. (found that out after reading the warning in the Cablela's catalog, thank goodness I don't live in CA)
