Not like... music as a whole, but...

I haven't played my instruments in around 5 weeks until tonight. It felt weird at first to play the guitar and only took a few moments to get back into the feel of it, but these are my thoughts:

- All my music and songs I wrote in the past are not praising God.
- Even if they were praising God, I can do that without expensive material items.
- Music equipment becomes an obsession.
- Practice time could be spent gaining knowledge of Scriptures.
- There's only twelve notes and all music is basically the same thing!

I used to love music so much but now I find myself wishing I didn't have a catchy tune in my head, and every now and then I still dawdle off in la-la land and starting imagining instrumentals in my head, then I catch myself doing it and realize more and more how I only want to think about God.

I want to love God with ALL my mind. It's just so hard sometimes but I must.

Don't give it up, music is a tool made to praise YHWH with... And it's also a means of relief from our day to day lives. Whenever I'm wiped out, I'll sit down and listen to a good post-rock song, and I feel better.
Try instrumental stuff, praise YHWH just by the sound, and the thoughts that come out of your head while you play, that's what I do.

Then you're doing it wrong. There is endless amounts of arrangements you can do. Start looking into classical music if you want something a little more challenging.

HI I have to disagree with you. When someone makes a statement that they gave up music for God....it really makes me wonder what went wrong in that persons life.
Some people make deals with the Lord....like if I give up something then God will forgive me or heal me and ect......Well the Lord doesn't make deals.
And I don't know if this is what happened to you.
When something tramatic happens in our lives things like this can happen.

The Lord made music for rejoicing ....he gave us songs in our hearts !!
If the music you wrote is not of God....then write new music !!
Maybe the Lord is telling you that you just need to make a change.
But it's hard to redo everything you spent years setting up...like for concerts and ect....maybe it will take you a year to get it all together.
I know this first hand....because as a professional guitarist the Lord wants me to set aside my electric guitar and only play acoustic....and that's fine with me.
But the guys in my band all want electric....so I have to walk a different path...write new songs...but do it in the name of the Lord !!

Thanks GW Williams

Music is a gift from God and I know Psalms talks about praising God with song and instruments. God put that talent and interest of music in you!

No reason you should feel ashamed of it! Keep singing the song in your heart, God can and will use that! Start asking God what He wants to do with your music and how to go about it. I wish you God's best and blessings my friend!

I would urge you not to quit. I did for a while and it was a mistake. Rather, discipline yourself so that there's a definite time for music practice and a time for anything else. Also, gear doesn't need to be an obsession as long as you also discipline this. Buy only 'x' amount of gear per a certain time period. budget it more and really limit yourself.

I did this as a bassist and it works.
