You brought back a memory I'd forgotten about. Remember when TV stations didn't broadcast 24 hours a day? At some point late at night, they'd play the national anthem and "sign off". Nothing but static/white noise till the next morning.
They'd go off at sunset.
Then, KAAY, Little Rock, Arkansas, was permitted to crank up the am signals to 50,000 watts. They could be heard from Mexico to Southern Canada!

I'm sorry. I missread your post. AM radio signed off at sunset.

Boy, does this ever bring back memories for me.
My mom had the Old Pea Picker cranked up on the record player. She had several albums, if memory serves.
At 75, I'm not ashamed to say that, yes I made myself a pea picker carrier.
My folks put in about half an acre of garden and many rows were peas. She canned more food than anyone else I've ever seen.
Tennessee Erny Ford showed us all how to make a pea carry case consisting of a half gallon paper milk carton with the folded top cut off and a piece of grocery string run from a hole near the top on one side to the same on the other. Perfect way to carry your picked peas.
He was such a warm person on TV and this tribute to him warmed me inside. That I never thought he'd be struggling with alcohol.
I think at one time he had his own variety show. I recall watching it often.

Those who enjoyed his music and comedy will remember that he referred to members of the opposite sex as "heffers".
Did you catch George Jones in the audience? In my opinion, among the top 5 greatest singers.
I once worked with a DJ at a local country radio station and one day at work I requested his incredible recording of "He stopped loving her tiday" but instead he pulled out one I'd never heard. "Just a Few of My Favorite Lies"
What an incredible voice!

That was a very heartwarming tribute.

I'm a big fan of the old "I Love Lucy" shows.
I get to see Ernie on 'em occasionally!

Anyone remember

Listening to the top songs of the year during the New Years Countdown on the radio

AND

record for free, every single top song on your cassette tapes?!

I wrote them all down in order and had all the hits I wanted
We had a local FM rock radio station that would announce that next Friday at midnight, they'd be playing a newly released album from a major band, all the way through with no interruption. So of course we'd record it on cassette and get a free album. FM was kind of "underground" back then. No way they could get away with that today.

Ah yes, "border blasters". I remember that. Last year I made a thread about them: Border Blasters

I remember being frustrated that I didn't have any sewing or home cooking classes in High School, but my best friend did.

She went to a Catholic HS and I did not.

I really needed to learn how to sew some things at home and my mom only knew a few basic stitches but I could not get them right.

Jeans were always way too long for me and I just could not get hemming them correctly

In total frustration, I walked on them, wore platform shoes all day long or just cut them off

Then didn't make "short" in the jeans section yet!

The jeans section only started at size 5 and nothing smaller

So I was also stuck buying children's clothing in HS

Things are better now, with a wide variety of sizes and lengths

But anyone else confused over boot cut, cowboy cut, or boyfriend jeans and other claims?

Just give me a pair of pants!

Ha ha. I remember there was one this guy in my friend group who elected to take home economics. Of course being teenage boys we felt obliged to tease him. "Are you gonna bake us some cookies today?" "You're going to make someone a good little wife someday." Stuff like that. Looking back, I would have benefited from taking it. It's not easy keeping a home.

Yes, but I bet you still have the bench you made in shop. :)

That's a fine looking bench there, but I never even got that sophisticated. The only thing I remember making in shop was a wooden kitchen cutting board. If you had made your post a month ago, I could've told you I still had it because I did. But a couple of weeks ago I tossed it out because after nearly half a century, the planks were starting to separate a little, and I was worried about bacteria remaining in the spaces after I washed it. I don't think it was ever used, just got stuck away in the bottom of a cabinet.

Cutting board is harder than one might think. Have to measure, cut, plane, glue, clamp, sand and stain. Everyone in my class had to make a bench. It cost $1.00 for the wood if you used pine and for a $1.25 you could get the oak. After a half century all those who had the foresight to buy oak, still have the lopsided, asymmetrical, dented and scratched bench taking up valuable space. I'd make fun of them, but I'm still wearing some of the same shirts...

Thank you. I'd forgotten all that. You've rekindled a badly needed sense of accomplishment in me. :D

Another True Confession: just a couple years ago, I threw away a shirt I wore in junior high. Yes I did grow to be a man, but I guess the fabric just stretched a lot. I just wore it to go jogging. The shirt was celebrating the CB radio, with a bunch of phrases like "breaker 1-9" and "10-4 good buddy". I still have a portable, hand-held CB radio that I got back then. The unit was like a big walkie talkie that you plugged in to your car's cigarette lighter charger. The antenna had a magnetic base so you could place it or remove from your car's roof easily.

Anybody remember the CB radio craze of the mid-70's? Anybody remember cars with cigarette lighters and ashtrays?
