I've taken POD Cincy Warrior's advice to post this, i want to know your opinion and thoughts about me...

I am struggling through some tough times in my walk with God at the moment. I feel like I've fallen astray and have taken for granted what he has done for me...

I am a music fanatic, and a song that has really hit home with me is a song called "Prodigal Son" by an artist named Andrew Kim. This guy is a secular artist, but when i heard that song, I felt like the lyrics were really speaking to me... (even the title). Some of the lines were like, "Like Machiavelli, the ends justify the means, but the Means my friend is what makes us who we be, I'm losing all control and its easy to see that I'm BLINDED by the world, and its the Light I can't see... Come Take Me, Come and Take me Home, COme Take me, Come and Take me Home.."

my friend gave me the link for it which lets u download it legally for free. the other songs i dont like...but this one song Prodigal Son has such deep meaning for me...maybe i'm crazy

I felt like the song was describing where i am in my life right now... have you ever felt like that about a song? And also... my friends from church are saying that it isn't right, that a song by a secular artist was kind of like the factor or trigger that has gotten me to stop and take a look at my life... they are saying that I'm wrong to have been inspired by that song. I dunno, even though it may not be a Christian singer, i felt like it was describing me, and so what, i think it's done a good job of making me stop to look at myself....

Am I weird that a song has triggered me to stop and take a look at my life??

Confused...tell me what to think

Confused Jen

Hi there jenfujimori

It's weird but I have heared God speak through loads of music , often by men who are not Christians ..........

I think there are many artists who maybe did know the Light at one time and they handle their "drifting " or "falling" by writing lyrics....... I think for many it is Cathartic.

Greetings
Cygnus

Try and listen to Dylans 3 Christian albums , and let us know what you think ...:)

i believe God can use anything and everything for His good. i dont think its crazy or wrong in any way for you to feel the way you do in regards to that song.

if i may quote nadroj1985:

how other people feel doesnt matter. its between you and God. if God uses a secular song to give you a wake up call, then go with it. Examine your life, pray constantly, and above all else, believe and trust that God's going to carry you through.

If God can speak through a donkey, why should we be surprised to hear Him speak through secular music?

Personally, I felt pretty much the same thing you described the first time I heard "Away from the Sun" and "The Road I'm On" by 3 Doors Down.
I was going to mention the Donkey thing .......... amazing how that Donkey served to give us a better insight into God's ways ...:D

Yes, I agree, God is the maker of all. He could use anything from a book, to a ride a friend gave you to church one day, to a tragic event, etc it could be anything! U just have to keep ur heart and eyes and ears open

God is able to use any medium. Thank you for sharing that song.

Prodigal Son is really an awesome song that captures the essence of someone longing to come back to God after realizing the mistake they made. I hope you do well in returning to the right path that God lays before you

great song
I too believe God can use secular songs to get to us who are Christians with the encouragement of His faithful love. Every secular artist, at least many secular pop artists, seem to be searching for a higher love ... and I've found that in Christ!

I'm on a slow dial up connection and I didn't get the song downloaded until well after I posted earlier, but I can definately see where that song would speak to somebody. Funny thing is, just a few days ago, I was sharing a story I'm working on with somebody and they didn't like the part in the story where the protagonist is too dispondant to live, puts a gun to his head, and pulls to trigger--only to discover after the hammer snapped that the safety was on. This person I shared the story with didn't think anybody could perceive that as God, he wanted something more dramatic, like the trigger refused to move or the slide jammed for some reason. Listening to that song, I felt like I was hearing the scene from my story. It worked, I believe, and I'm keeping my story as-is after hearing that.

Just thought I'd share. Thanks for posting this thread. And it's nice to have a forum where people actually agree with some things I say instead of trying to argue with me and make me look like an idiot like they do at most of the websites I visit :D

so do you think God is able to use someone to serve a purpose whether they are christian or not? or would he only use Christians for His Glory?
I certainly believe that God uses people all the time, Christian or not, for His glory! All good comes from God. Anything with true beauty comes from God. I think that God uses some musicians as "channels" through which he flows his beautiful music into the world. And some musicians feel this way, including famous composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Johannes Brahms. Others, who seem to not have such a strong relationship with God, say they feel it coming from somewhere. My favorite guitarist, Trey Anastasio, basically believes in God because he feels this and he knows its not of himself.
I think that in Heaven, among other things, there exists the most beautiful, prettiest, perfect song in the universe. And when we hear music on earth, and there are breathtaking moments of beauty in it, they are tiny glimpses of the music of Heaven.

That's deep. I've never thought about it before but you've got a point there.
