The last time I had a cat was April 18, 2019 - shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic started. The on again, off again mask mandates (even for fully vaccinated people) caused a long delay. Last year I fostered a cat for almost three weeks, but she was not happy here and needed to live in her first foster family's home.

Fast forward to last week. With nothing to do except listen to audio books and take long walks (when the weather cooperates), I went back to the shelter website to see who they have now. There is one little girl who meets all of the criteria (small, young adult, extremely friendly, very cuddly). But there are two more things I need to know:
  1. How soft is her fur?
  2. Does she like to be picked up?
The second question is impossible to answer because she's at a cat cafe where "don't pick cats up" is one of the rules. And that one is HUGE for me. So I need divine help to decide if this cat, whose name is Jackie now, is who I have been waiting for since before she was born. I need to rely on God's wisdom, not my own. I also need real faith, not mere optimism. To some extent I do, but anxiety is one of my biggest problems. Also, my mom is paranoid about everything and refuses to budge when she has strong opinions about things, including rules for having cats. Of course I would not be worried about this if living on my own was possible, so please do not say I should ignore what my mom thinks. I am mentally, socially, and physically disabled and have to go with what Mom says no matter what.

Anyway, I also want prayers for Jackie to do what she must do to prove whether she is who we should adopt or not. I want to go there knowing I will see her real personality, not a sleepy cat who is only interested in napping, whether she is "the one" for us or not. And of course, Jackie needs to still be available for a few more days. Adoptions are first come first serve.

Sorry for the long post. Thanks for reading all of it and your prayers.

A lot of cats don't like to be picked up. It is possible to overcome that. I have an older Siamese who hated being off the ground. I persisted. I picked her up often. I would put her down, but very gently. She's learned to trust me. The younger they are the easier it is.

I had a cat who did not like to be held when she was younger but eventually enjoyed being held sideways (no with her paws on my shoulder). Maybe I just had to figure that out.

Thank God for the hope and faith I have now that the love I have been waiting for is finally coming to me.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease.

This is how I know God is guiding me to the light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi,

We have a cat rescue and used to all types of cat personalities. Most cats do not like to be picked up and its really uncomfortable for them if we go against their will. Most cats like to be petted and its best to allow the cat to get the affection they need on their terms. This builds trust with them.

I am also a big believer, if possible, that cats should be adopted in pairs. Cats can get really lonely if they are by themselves and if you can get two siblings you will see how much affection cats can give each other by cuddling and cleaning each other.

I have a question, what if the cat you adopt turns out they don’t want to be picked up? Will you return it? I look at cats as like children, we adjust to their personality types and love them unconditionally.

I truly wish you well is trying to find your perfect cat. They are amazing God-given animals. God bless!

I volunteered at a shelter (with the cats of course) for 8 years. It was not always fun work and I wished I could foster whole litters of kittens every summer just because they hate to be in cages almost all day. All the times kittens ran away from me, I was sure they were smart enough to know why I was picking them up. None of them acted like just being off the floor was what they hated. Some adults hated to be held by humans, but very few scratched and bit me, and one of those whelped five kittens the next week.

It depends on the cat and your schedule. Not all cats like other cats, so it is best to adopt littermates or a pair of cats who were in the same foster home. Unfortunately, I am lucky to be able to afford one cat. But I am usually home, so that is not a problem here.

There are only two things that make make my mom take her back:
  1. Litterbox avoidance
  2. Scratching/biting people
Based on Jackie's description, neither of these should happen.

I know many adoptions are what people often call "a match made in heaven" - not just human marriages.

Update: I went to the cat cafe to meet Jackie on Thursday afternoon. It was only 3:00, but she was gone. Someone had adopted her about two hours earlier. I stayed a full hour anyway, How could I not?

Today (Sunday) my mom applied online to meet a young gray tabby named Archer. He is almost 1 year, 7 months old and only weights 7 pounds. We are now waiting for a volunteer to schedule an appointment to meet him because he is living in a foster home.

Thank you for your prayers. I will keep you posted!
