Best advice I can give from very recent spiritual experience is, dont try and interpret things in a way that aligns with what you think, or what others think, or what appeals most to you, because ultimately there is one truth, and that is the truth of God, so if you want to understand things in more depth, rather than looking to find ways of understanding what it is that you believe according to what you think you know, apply what you do know and let God strengthen and mold you in his time, our own volition can sometimes hinder the plan of God.
I say this is a recent spiritual experience personally because I was on a similar path, trying to decide what it is that I believe about certain doctrines etc, but the truth is, it does not really matter as such, in terms of our spiritual growth, unless something is hindering you or holding you back from growing, then it is best to ask God in prayer for answer to particular questions, sometimes it takes time to understand things properly, but you can take it from me that what seems like it doesnt make sense to start with, always ends up making more sense in the future, when you operate in Faith, I am by no means spiritually mature, but I do know for sure that the word of God is indeed alive and powerful, understand and apply this and let God work in your life, he promises to give us the answers we need to continue and the gifts to strengthen our Faith.
So to answer what I believe to be your question, the greatest thing that can hinder spiritual growth and understanding, is forming your own conclusion on what you think the spiritual life is about, without actually applying it to your life, because it only becomes a spiritual truth, when you have lived it.
Apply what you know, live it and grow.
