  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I need help reading the bible

It seems that I read the bible but I dont like interpret and get the message

Like lets say John 3:16-I swear if they didnt tell me the verse I would skip righ by it and not get the message of anything

I dont see how pastors can quote certaing verses cause I read them but I dont interpret them INDIVIDUALLY

Does anyone have any tips that can help me get the meaning and interpret while sseing theose little verses that god has for me.

El Sato what you need are tools. The first thing is to find a bible that has language you can understand. Both the New International Version (NIV) and the New Living Translation (NLT) are good.

the second thing to look for is a commentary on a book of the bible that you would like to read--say the gospel of John. There are places online that have notes about the verses, but i've found that a commentary you can actually hold is better because you can take notes in the margains and highlight various lines.

the third thing is a notebook and a pen for taking notes.
read a chapter and then ask yourself the 4 basic questions.
who: who does the chapter discuss.
what: what happens.
when: is there a time period mentioned?
where: where is this geographically

I left out the traditional fifth question, why, on purpose.
instead write down what characteristic you see in God from these verses. is He acting as a Father, is He providing, do you see His justice or His mercy, etc.

the reason you do a notebook is because writing helps you to both look at what you are reading and then remember it.

All this might seem like a lot to do, but if you will try this on the weekends or when you have more time you will be able to see how much more you can learn and understand.
and pray---always pray---for understanding.

Remember that most pastors have usually gone to seminary of some sort and people help *them* study the word, too. Then they pass on their learning to us.

I have a commentary I use. I also ask questions here and everywhere else I can. Or I ask my preacher or someone I trust on Biblical issues. I look up commentary on verses on-line.

And with the New Testament I take one passage at a time. I don't go on until I think I've got it or get my questions answered. When you start to take it slowly and one verse at a time, it seems to get easier to see the point of a passage or chapter.

And if you ask the Lord to open your heart to His wisdom when you're reading His word, He really does. :)
