  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey, I need to create connections with one or a few believers of the Holy Bible. The college campus is a lonely place, spiritually speaking. Making friends is not the issue but making friends with fellow christians and like-minded individuals is what I need. I think resorting to online communication is a great medium to form deep enough relationships with others to have healthy and intelligent conversations. I hate the promotion of homosexuality I see spread throughout the hallways and pouring out my professors' mouths. I need to talk with one or a few people to encourage me to be courageous and stay strong. Remind me to not hate the sinner but hate the sin.

Welcome to CF!

College is a place where one encounters a wide diversity of people and ideas. I agree with DerbyHist2 that finding a Christian community on campus can be a good thing, to keep you anchored in your faith during this journey. The American version of what DerbyHist2 describes is that there's probably a website of student organizations on campus that you could look through. Groups like Inter-Varsity, Cru, Navigators, or Chi Alpha might have a presence on your campus, and I think these are all socially conservative groups, so they should fit your values. You might also find some common ground with the Catholic student group on campus, if there is one. Some American universities have chaplains, and some don't (mine doesn't); if yours does, then the chaplains can be a good resource to point you in the right direction.

Might I suggest taking "hate" out of the equation? Perhaps, when you think of interacting with the diversity of people around you, you could think of gay people as similar to followers of a different religion. For example, I disagree with Hinduism on some very important things -- mono/polytheism, for one. But I don't hate Hinduism; I just disagree with it in some places. So in my friendships with my Hindu colleagues and students, I don't hate them or their religion. I like and respect them as people, with the knowledge that we have some points of disagreement about beliefs and practices that are important to us. Could you be in a place like that as you interact with your gay colleagues and professors -- treating them with respect as people, and disagreeing with their beliefs rather than hating their beliefs?
