Hey all...I'm really struggling with something. I have not always been a believer, and even when I became one I engaged in some very horrible things. And on my way back to loving Christ I came across an unforgivable sin, and it caught my attention because I thought all sins were already forgiven. And so I checked it out and did some research. I now have like 3 totally different definitions. One is that you must commit it with your mouth or your pen, two is that you can only commit that sin in your heart, and three is lik eyou have to worship Satan or something. Now I'm REALLY lost. If someoen could send me some help and back it up with scripture that would be WONDERFUL. Thanks!

The only "unforgivable sin" is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. A believer cannot commit this sin. To commit blasphemy of the Holy Spirit you'd have to truly believe the works of the Lord are the works of satan, and thus, evil. A believer can lie to themselves and say that they believe this but it's about as honest as just saying you don't believe something you know to be true.

God bless

Hi Diana,

The unforgivable sin is the sin of unrepentace unto death. IOW, when you are in mortal sin and you die and you are not sorry for your sins. It's unforgivable because you won't repent.

I don't want to detract from anything anyone else has said. They are all good answers. I just want to add this to the list. Anyone who continues to be concerned enough to ask that question, has definitely NOT committed that sin.

Jesus summed up all the commandments, "You shall love God with all your heart, all your strength, all your soul, and all your mind, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself." Anyone who continually practices that cannot commit the unforgiveable sin.

Excellent point!

Very odd to me that everyone has some idea that it's worse than anything imaginable.. however, the bible translators used the word "blaspheme" and "blasphemy" because they have a meaning. The meaning is as follows:

Main Entry: blas·pheme
Pronunciation: blas-'fEm, 'blas-"
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): blas·phemed; blas·phem·ing
Etymology: Middle English blasfemen, from Late Latin blasphemare -- more at BLAME
Date: 14th century
transitive senses

1 : to speak of or address with irreverence
2 : REVILE, ABUSE
intransitive senses : to utter blasphemy
- blas·phem·er /-'fE-m&r; 'blas-"fE-m&r, -f&-m&r/ noun

Not quite as horrible as I'm sure as some of you thought, huh? In fact, I think we've all referred to God in less than the most respectful manner at some time or another. It's really an extention of the second Commandment (Ex 20:7) The Jews actually never used the Word for God simply for fear of accidently using it irrevently. In fact most people didn't even know it! As I understand it, It was only said once per year, and that was in the form of a prayer said only by the high priest in the Holy of Holies.. We throw the words around like nothing these days..

As a side note, in order for a sin to be a sin, one requirement is consent. So don't anyone go hang themselves because they can remember speaking irreverently about the Holy Spirit. If you didn't know, you weren't responsible.. But now you know...

Be careful to not continue in sin for too long, though, as there are always consequences to them. If a person sows their lives to sin, they aren't really Christians, but deceived. We all sin and come short of the glory of God, but must turn away from sin and hate it. Be careful with the heart.

There is a road that leads to blasphemy and many are on it.

Matthew 7:13
"Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.

Blasphemy involves the tongue or the things we say. Jesus makes it clear that we need a pure heart before God. Then when our heart is pure the right words will come out of our mouth. Loving, kind gentle words. We will have all of the fruit of the Spirit manifest in our lives.

If your on the new and the living way, you have nothing to worry about. The people who need to worry are the ones God gives over to a reprobate mind.

2 Tim. 3:8
Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.

You see, people like Jannes & Jambres who have been given over to a reprobate mind, speak out against God and the men of God.
