I have been looking for Christ and things are really starting to come together. There is one problem. I think I committed the unforgivable sin a few months ago. Here's what happened. I post on another message board (not Christian related). I posted a 'favorite quotes' thread and this was at a time when I was really frustrated with religion. I had posted some anti-religious (atheistic) quotes. Those quotes were really hateful and I think some even indicated that religion was bad. Then I had unaccepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior (I had accepted him before, but really didn't believe). About a week or two after this I even posted a "How Religious Are You" thread. The options I put were "Religious" "Agnostic" or "Atheist". I've always had a pretty hard heart all my life. And since that incident (which happened last July, by the way), my personality has gone away. I don't even get mad (although, I do think there's a lot of pent up anger inside of me). I feel like I have something big missing in my life, which is miserable. I had no idea that there was an unforgivable sin, when I posted those posts. I really don't know if the Lord will forgive me or not. But when I repent I want to be able to say "I believe Jesus died for my sins" ... because right now I'm doubting God will forgive me if I repented.

The only unforgivable sin is blaspheming the Holy Spirit. It doesn't sound like you did that.

Before I became a Christian, I took the Lord's name in vain constantly. It was awful. When I look back on it, I cannot believe how great God's grace is. If you're afraid that you've committed the unforgivable sin, relax. You haven't. If you had, you wouldn't be concerned about it.

Just open your heart to Jesus, tell him you are very sorry for all your sins (confess them specifically if you can). All you need to do is decide to live for him instead of going your own way. Make him Lord of your life, not just your Savior. He wants to make you a new creature in Christ!

Hi Space, actually this has come up alot on these boards with people thinking of turning to the Lord, it must be the devil trying once last act of discouragement. Don't listen to him, the unforgiveable sin was directed at the leaders in Jesus days who were calling him Satan, he was warning them the consequences if they persist in that line of teaching the people, very serious to thwart Jesus ministry when seeing miracles before your eyes and still not converting but to say it was through the devil. Be at peace, anybody that would qualify for that which I believe is rare for great enemies of God have found there way back wouldn't even be able to ask or want forgiveness. The Lord will reject no one and wants all to follow him, to have the light of life that he will give you. The Lord does want to be apart of your life, God bless.

Thanks for your responses! I'm just wondering about something ... how would someone, who's committed the unforgivable sin, feel about repenting? Would they have any desire to turn from their sins and live for the Lord? I read somewhere that if you've committed the unforgivable sin then you just can't repent. What does that mean? And what would happen if you've committed the unforgivable sin, without knowing what you were doing?

Thanks!

There is something in the Bible called a reprobate mind. It talks about God turning someone over to a reprobate mind (Romans 1 I think. But definitley somewhere in Romans). It means that person has rejected the Holy Spirit so many times that their heart is hardened and they can no longer respond to God's grace.

I believe this is rare. The fact that you are repentant and concerned about your salvation leads me to believe just the opposite. Your heart is actually soft and wants to respond to God's love. Stop holding back!!! Satan is toying with your mind, trying to tell you that you aren't worthy. None of us are worthy of God's grace. That's how deep and wide it is. Jesus is stretching out his arms to you and asking for you to embrace him. Please, don't wait another second!

The only unforgivable or unpardonable sin was in the past before you were born, as someone already stated. Here's a great site about that:
http://www.intouch.org/myintouch/exploring/bible_says/single_questions/unpardonable_129541.html

So anyone is safe, once they have made the decision to rely on Christ to pay for all their sins on the cross and to get them to Heaven one day - without relying at all on any good works or promises of their own. (See verses in my signature). And they don't have to worry about losing their salvation, because that's impossible:
I Jn 5:13
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
(NIV)
Rom 6:23
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(NIV)
Rom 11:29
29 for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable.
(NIV)
John 10:28-29
28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.
29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand.
(NIV) (We can't even snatch ourselves out of God's hand.)

If you come across verses that seem to contradict these, ask yourself which verses can be taken more than one way - because God never contradicts Himself.

Aloha in Jesus, friend :)

Hi Space. lets say someone did commit the unforgivable sin, lets use a Pharisee back in Jesus time for that is who he rebuke with this possible penalty. If he was found guilty of this sin he would never turn back to Christ. His rejection would be permanent, like I said before, not to be concern about that since your heart is calling you to embrace your Creator and to follow Jesus. People are judged on what they know so its probably would be very rare God would strike someone with a permanent sentence in that condition of not knowing they had committed this sin. The most dangerous thing for a soul is to continue in sin, breaking the commandments, etc. because that takes away the sense of God and replaces it with self, very dangerous to be ones own master, you never regret having Jesus as your Lord and Savior and Master to follow and lead you home, God bless, Merry Christmas.

Space, I think the question about the unforgiveable sin has been addressed quite adequately, but you do bring up something else that I'd like to touch on here....

I went through a similar kind of thing when I was in my twenties.... Later I discovered what was happening when I heard a teaching on "a slumbering spirit". When we willfully sin after having accepted Christ, our spirits go to sleep - sort of a dissociative thing. With a sleeping spirit you cannot feel the same intensity of emotion, you cannot hear from God as you are supposed to, and you cannot empathize with others. There are other things you cannot do. You can, however, sin without feeling guilty - but this fact is disturbing in itself and can actually push you in the right direction.

When I discovered that my spirit had gone to sleep, I began to call out to the Lord Jesus to awaken me, and the first two things I heard from Him were [sup]1[/sup] that I was a "talitha" (not dead, only sleeping) and [sup]2[/sup] that He would heal the landscape of my life in a single day. Then I started noticing things like the animals beside the road and the smell of sugar....

the teaching tape I heard was by John and Paula Sandford. Changed my life forever. They have books and tapes out there.....

anyhoo, I'm falling asleep bodily here, lol
blessings on you ((((sweet dreams))))

Well....If you had committed the unforgiveable sin, then God would have totally abandoned you and no saving graces would then be available to enable you to perform such converting works as repentance, trust in God, desire for God, etc. The very fact that these works of conversion still remain in you indicate the very opposite as regards the unforgiveable sin. The truth is: If you can come to Him, then you may come to Him.
Abandon these worthless doubts that Satan is harassing you with. Take just opposite of what the Father of lies is saying and you will no doubt come up with the truth. You can get in, but he can't and right there is the envy. Go for it!

Over and over again in the New Testament, God promises forgiveness to all who ask. He does not make exceptions in these promises. Therefore if someone has committed the unforgivable sin, he must not be able to repent. I suppose if someone did commit the unforgivable sin, he wouldn't care. He'd be too angry at God to care, and this would never subside during his entire life. He would never feel guilty. Since the Holy Spirit convicts people of sin before leading them to the cross, why would He waste His time with someone who couldn't be forgiven?

"When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt[a] in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:" - John 16:8

"All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away." - John 6:37
