I need advice on what to do

Should I change my character's ethnicity?

  • Yes, it would make more sense to change it.

  • No, it shouldn't matter.

I have a problem and I'm turning y'all for help. I began a story where my lead character is Jewish. She doesn't know that she is but she does by the end of story. Question: I attended a Messianic Synagogue for 2 years and during that time it made sense for her to be Jewish. Now, that I'm not there anymore should I change it. The background of the story is a woman who goes back to the 1st Century and is trying to get back home. She is presumed by everyone to be Jewish, and it would be better if she were because she's trying to find Jesus, both litterally and metephorcially. See the gospel went "to the Jew first and then the Gentile" and it would make things easier for her if she were Jewish. Only I'm not feeling it anymore and if I made things harder for her, it might make my story more interesting. Help! I need advice. Thanks.

Well I guess I'm confused about where the focus of the conflict really is. Is it that she can't find him literally? Like "Oh he's in Toledo this week, so sorry." or that she has an emptiness and misdirection in her life that can only be fulfilled when she encounters the Lord Yeshua? Or is the conflict surrounding the fact that she doesn't know she's Jewish? And if that's part of the conflict, it seems like it might be confusing what the main conflict could be,

Honestly I think there's much more significance and historically fascinating areas to explore if you have her be Jewish and discover the truth about Messiah in His time. I'd read it! I'd also love to see it as historically, culturally, and religiously accurate for the time period.

Hey, thanks. I can see both points of view. I could write it to where it's revealed that she herself is Jewish and not just the person that she's being mistaken for. I do want to add the element of being Gentile in this whole thing. She does make friends with a Roman girl and she could be my Gentile element. The thing is that when she gets back to her millennium she finds out that she is Jewish and that her parents and siblings are now living in Israel, so she'd have to go back. Right after 9/11. I picked that because anyone would have been crazy to go there right after that. But she wanted to meet her family. And to answer your question, eirene it's both. She feels that the only way to find Him so she can go home is to litterally find Him. So she goes on this odysey to find Him. She prayed that God would make Himself real to her and then she wakes up in the first century. I know that would never happen, but I think on some lever we want it to. I know I've wished I could go back and see Him face to face like people of that day did. Thanks for the input and if you have anything else to add or ask, please do.

first may i say that i love the idea. i think it's a real spark of brilliance, and if you let God work through your pen (or pencil or computer, whatever your thing is), i wouldn't be surprised if He really used this.
i do like the idea of her being a gentile, though. i think the added obstacle would give you a lot to work with.
