I need a push
There was a knock on my front door at 3 AM.
It was my neighbor, George, and he was really drunk.
He asked me, “Rico. Can you give me a push.”
I told him that he was drunk and in no condition to drive.
He insisted, “Rico, I need a push.”
I told him to go home
And if he, still, needed a push in the morning,
I would.
He begged, “Rico, please give me a push.”
I refused him and sent him home.
Getting back to bed my wife asked me who it was.
I told her and she reminded me
of when George Jr. went all the way to the mall
to help us with our car.
She added of how he had had the part, that was broken, in his car
and had repaired our car right there on the spot.
Feeling guilty, I thought that maybe there was a problem
and they had sent George, to ask for a push, to get him away.
You know how over helpful a “drunk” tries to be.
Getting to George’s house, it was still dark.
I saw a light on in the backyard.
I called out, “George!”
He answered, “Hyuh?”
I said, “George, it’s me, Rico.”
He slurred, “Rico, you came to give me a push?”
I replied, “Yes, George, where are you?”
Still slurring he says, “Rico, you really came to give me a push?”
I stated, “Yes, George, I did. Now, Where are you.”
George started crying, “Rico, you are a real friend.”
I said, “Thank you, George.”
He slurred, again, “Rico, my friend, will you give me a push.”
I said, getting tired, “Yes. Where are you?”
George shouts out happily, “Over here at the swings!!!”
