  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

There are a lot of free “shell accounts” out on the net that you can get. It’s not as good as having your own box but it’s a great start with a full time server on the net. The best part about free shell accounts is that it will get your hands wet with all the OS’s out there. There are some good pay/donation services as well that blow away the standard commercial web space many pay for and some free ones do as well as pay web space sites. The free ones will get you up and going with the basics of course. Just do a search on google.com for free shell accounts and you will have plenty to work with.

Well, I believe I originally download Red Hat from http://www.redhat.com/download/products.html using FTP (I mean I followed the instructions at that Web page for downloading using FTP, that's not an FTP address), but I have broadband and it still took me quite a while. I don't know what your connection speed is.

As you can tell I am also trying to learn Linux (though I have a full time job to distract me from fun stuff like this). If you encounter questions feel free to PM me. If I don't know then finding the answer might help me to learn. So far I've just setup the dual boot with WinME and have a "Data" partition that both WinME and Linux can "see". The machine is on my Windows network using Samba (when booted under Linux). I haven't gotten into programming on Linux yet, I just know some basics.

If you only want to learn the basics of Linux and not really use it as an OS, I recommend Knoppix. if you go to www.linuxiso.org i think there should be a version of Knoppix to download somewhere. Basically you burn Knoppix to a CD, and you can boot up your computer and run Knoppix whenever you feel like it, without actually installing anything to your hard drive.

Google search for Linux basics, and don't get discouraged. It will take you years to really harness the power of Linux. Remember, google is your friend, man pages are your friend, PHP is awesome (though you will probably use Perl more often if you really get into Linux programming).
