I must be broken in order to be saved

Jesus only saves broken people. He said that He's the Rock, and whoever falls on this Rock will be broken, but he on whom It falls will be ground to powder. The Bible says that a broken and contrite spirit the Lord will not despise.

I tend to think I am not broken. I have to be broken in order to be saved. I wish that my breaking could be gentle, not harsh. But I have to be broken.

Some people have harsh breakings. They have to hit bottom, such as, say, by alcoholism or drug abuse, before they sincerely turn to Christ. But other people seem to have gentle breakings.

An example of a harsh breaking in the Bible is the Philippian jailer; he was terrified by an earthquake. An example of a soft breaking in the Bible is the guy who came to Jesus about his feverish, dying son. Jesus told him, "Your son lives." He went back to his house and found that his son had been healed at the same time Jesus told him that his son lives. The Bible says that "then he believed, and his whole household."

Will my breaking be soft or harsh? If it does not occur at all, then I will not be saved.

Jesus certainly saved broken people. Amen! But I don't think we can add brokenness to the requirement of repentance and faith.

Now if you wish to say that repentance is a kind of brokenness, then, I guess, I'm OK with your original statement.

I always saw brokenness was a preparation for service rather than a condition for salvation. While we were yet sinners He died for us.

Earlier in my Christian life I prayed to be broken and had no idea the journey that would ensue. In fact I was advised not to pray like that. However, desire to be broken flows from a love for Him. Soft in the potter's hands even as His heart on the Cross was like wax.

Soft or harsh is not the issue, being deeply changed and sharing in His sufferings is where the fruit is.

All this is enveloped in His love.

He knows what you can handle.

The Bible says that a broken and contrite spirit the Lord will not despise.
An ox can be broken by running astray onto a broad highway, and getting smashed by a speeding car.

Or, the ox can be broken-in to its yoke.

What we do need, is to be broken-in to the yoke of Jesus >

"'Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.'" (Matthew 11:29)

But, in order to be broken-in to the yoke of Jesus we need to deny ourselves >

"If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me." (in Luke 9:23)

Just being broken does not make us submissive in the yoke of Christ. We need to become submissive to how our Father personally rules each of us in His own peace >

"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful." (Colossians 3:15)
