  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I just watched Man Of Steel on the weekend and thought it was alright. It was so jam-packed with action and there was so little dialogue. I remember the old Superman movies that had lots of dialogue in them and the action was limited. The movies were better back then. Anyone agree or disagree?

One of my favorite movies was made in the early 1980's. It was a sci-fi/alien psychological thriller. Though the effects are a bit dated to today's standards, it had the perfect balance of action, dialogue, and paranoia inducing suspense.

There was a prequel made for it a few years ago... yeah, sure, you got all this CGI stuff to add to it and make it more realistic than puppetry, but everything else really fell flat to me and I didn't care about the characters at all. I'm pretty sure they cared more about keeping the main lead's hair flawless than they did about building suspense (because you could see through everything they tried to pull so easily).

That being said, I don't think today's movies are necessarily "worse" compared to those made years ago. I think some pretty epic films are still being produced, I just don't think they're that popular. In fact that 1980's movie I love wasn't very popular (though it's a cult classic now). They probably don't last long in theaters and people probably aren't rushing to buy them off the shelves when they debut on DVD.

The lowest common denominator loves simple, predictable things. That's what you're going to get 99% of the time when you go to the theater, and also 99% of the time you look at the Newest Releases rack at Wal-Mart.

I also love older movies as they had better dialog and far less sex and violence. For example, I recently watched Mia Farrow in "See No Evil". In this thriller, there was no overt sex or violence. The dialog was intelligent, the movie moved along and kept you on the edge of your seat. It was superbly well done. Movies should be done in this same manner today.

I disagree.

I enjoyed the last trilogy of Batman films, and the Lord of the Rings films. I don't care for the new (ie last decade) Spiderman films. It just depends on the movie, not when it was made.

Man of Steel was total butt. It had boring nonsensical characters, repetitive action sequences, and was waaaay too plotty with almost none of it paying off.

I agree that older movies didn't fall into the currently popular trend of convoluted, bloated melodrama, but then again, we are getting Pacific Rim and Elysium. Both movies examples of the big summer blockbuster at its best.

If you want some good superhero movies and you've already seen the live action ones, check out the DC animated films. Way better than their live action stuff imo.

I agree buddy ... I miss the 'innocence' of how things were filmed -- they were genuine and lacked polish ...

I like even more the real old stuff like Ben Hurr ... Cleopatra ... and 70's sci-fi like planet of the apes and Logan's Run

I enjoy old movies from time to time, but I much prefer realistic acting over melodramatic acting. Also movies got much better with the invention of the steady cam.

I wouldn't want to live in a world where all movies were heavily censored like they were before the 1960s.

I agree, except for The Pink Panther with Peter Sellers. That was one of my favourites, but when I watch it now: it's so slow, nothing happens. The new movie of it is better.
But you don't have to miss them, a lot are on youtube.

It depends. Things have changed. I'm generally a believer that some/most films would benefit from a 2-2.5hrs run time, but it has to be a good movie period.

Ridley Scott's 'Alien', and to a lesser extent James Cameron's sequel 'Aliens' two great films that slowly build to their climaxes with a lot of great stuff in between. But you try to release those flicks with their exact pace (particularly Alien) today and they wouldn't bank at the box office, cause audiences for the most part don't have the patience to sit through it anymore.

I have more to say, but I'll do it later, cause I love this type of topic.

BTW, Pacific Rim was awesome.

The Christopher Reeves Superman movie was good... for the 80's.

I saw Man of Steel the other day and really enjoyed it. It definitely could've been better, but I didn't think it was bad.

I also love the fact that it had many parallels with Judeo Christian themes.

Gene Hackman played Luthor perfectly

Incognito Guy Pacific Rim was good huh? I think I may go see it. If it sucks, I will be pm'ing you to reimburse me the movie ticket price. :p

If it sucks, you watched it wrong. Yeah, figure that one out :p

The first two Christopher Reeves flicks were good, but flawed at points. The second two on the other hand (where Richard Pryor controls weather with a laptop...yep...let that sink in) (and with nuclear man and a woman breathing, screaming, and falling in space...yep) were awful. I liked Hackman as Luthor, but I'll say Kevin Spacey's take on the character in Superman Returns is my favorite.

Superman Returns is also a solid flick, but filled with flaws and lack of continuity and logic at points. Still though, I really enjoy it.
