I have had three shifts so far on the kettle this season and I have really enjoyed myself. The kettle I'm on is inside the mall, nice and toasty warm.
I find kids so curious about the kettle stand. They stare at it as they are walking by and usually a few minutes later they are running to me inserting some change. I'm sure they asked their parents what it was and wanted to put some money in for themselves!
I met a girl I went to highschool with 20 years ago which was really cool. A brass band from a nearby Corps were walking through the mall from where they were playing and asked me if I would care for some music. It was simply beautiful. All the shoppers stood by and I sure got lots of donations.
I know we aren't really supposed to be doing things like reading or talking on a cell phone but what I was doing was my knitting while standing at the kettle. It started up lots of conversations. People were curious and stopped to ask what I was making which brought in more donations. I can knit without looking down so I was totally able to make eye contact with passers by. Do you all think this is ok?
