  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

... and I cried tears of joy.

For it was the best film, bar Equilibrium, that I have ever seen!

Oh, the portrayals of King Leonidas and Xerxes I were some of the best acting I have had the pleasure of witnessing!

And the battles... they've practically made it an art form!

And the backdrops/scenery that would make any artist weep at his own insignificance.

Not to mention the music was absolutely astonishing and contributed greatly to the atmosphere.

And the dialogue... simply awesome.

This film is too awesome to describe in mere words, but easily described by interpretive dance!

I'm just going to say at this point that if you don't mind the VERY OCCASIONAL ( and I truly mean very occasional) partial nudity of women (as is any depiction of Ancient Greek culture in most media) or the art-like and visually striking but ultimately gory combat as the 300 Spartans make their stand versus a million Persian troops from all corners of the globe... then I would recommend you go see this film as soon as you possibly can.

I somehow doubt you will regret it. :D

What?! How is it not good that the character of Xerxes was androgenous?!

It does help to increase the sheer, arrogant evil he emanated.
He didn't look evil, he looked like the centerpiece for a gay pride parade.

If you want to see a well-played, arrogant, evil Xerxes, rent "The 300 Spartans," which is the movie that inspired Frank Miller to write the "300" comic. It was made in the 60's, so visually speaking it sucks by comparison, but it has a lot more substance to it for the most part (with the exception of the cheesy romantic subplot). Xerxes is a man in that one, and quite an evil man.

You don't have to look evil to emanate evil.

He didn't even emanate evil. I could see what they were trying to do with him, make him out to be some sort of devil figure, but you can only take the Mel Gibson influence so far.

Seriously, the Xerxes in the older movie was the much better Xerxes. Arrogant, opulent, hot-tempered, demanding. The part was acted, and acted well.

You have to wonder though, would a historical portrayal of 300 be that entertaining nowadays? Seriously, the first 2 days was just a slaughter of 10,000-20,000 Persians. If there isn't a challenge throughout the movie, then it will tend to get boring.

Probably why I really liked Alexander...

Now when are they going to bring out the Hannibal/Punic War movie? I love movies on the Antiquity.

A fall of the Aztecs movie would be good too.

Did you see the History Channel's special on Thermopalae? I think an accurate drama could have been very entertaining if done right.

A movie on the Punic Wars would be great, I hope they'd do it justice. Good ol' Roman conquest. :)
