• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I just don't understand.....

Why do people go to counselors for depression, when chances are the counselor had never experienced depression?

I had depression for most of my teen and early adult years. I was put on medication, which I stopped taking. I was offered counseling a few times, but I always told the counselor to mind their own business and never went. It was only through the power of God that I have been able to overcome it.

I don't believe God expects us to live out our lives depending on a pill or advice from an unsaved person.

well, that is your option. For me, it helped having someone to talk to who knew everything about me. I can say they knew everything because I told them. Maybe meds didn't work for you but they have worked for me and many others here on cf. I'll not bash you for going the route you did and I hope you won't bash me for going the way I did. I have now graduated from counseling and no longer have to go. But yes I am still on meds and always will be because I see the difference they make.

Recovery is a place for Christian peer support and help and not for professional care. Therefore these things are considered off topic:
  • Promoting yourself as an expert
  • Diagnosing
  • Offering treatment of any kind to other members
  • Prescribing over the counter remedies
  • Discouraging someone from taking prescribed medications, getting professional services or using hotlines or crisis lines
  • Discouraging the use of the Christian faith to cope with problems and struggles.
Please notice the highlighted portion of this Guideline used here in Recovery ....Please do not discourage anyone from getting professional care and advice
