I have been falling away from God for 11 months.

I can barely hold faith, I have trouble reading the bible and praying. The thing that hardest for me is to hold faith in Jesus. The way I started doubting was I started getting gut feelings I was going to hell and I could do nothing about it. I was deceived into believing this because i trusted my gut above God. Now I am in shambles, I pray and read the bible but it gets harder every day.

Hey Dylan,

We all need healthy, practical ways to keep our faith alive, maybe prayer and reading the Bible isn’t what you’re called to do right now. Forcing it may hurt more than heal. I know that might be a controversial thing to write, but bear with me.

Some people aren’t built for being a prayer warrior or a daily Bible reader. Maybe it’s chemical, or maybe it’s just a bad patch and sometime later they will do incredible things with prayer and Bible teaching. There’s a season for everything.

As an older man, the best thing I can do for you is share ways that have helped me stay strong and excited to be living in Christ.

Apologetics is great for men. Watching debates online. Christian cinema. Evangelism. Christian podcasts. Exercise (try some walking/light jogging at the same time every morning.)

Years ago I heard a helpful phrase from an older friend in the church, he said to “keep out of your own head.” It wasn’t advice directly for me, but I took it and it’s been a big help! If we want to think on anything don’t let it be fear and hell, think on Jesus our hero.

The Word tells us to meditate on Scriptures day and night as seen in Psalm 1 and elsewhere. Therefore we can know that focusing on the Bible daily is for everyone.

We are also called to "pray without ceasing." That means everyone.

I pray you will be given light and wisdom as to what has held you back and that you will be given strength and guidance to walk closely with the Lord.

It's alright brother. Time to stop listening to fear. We can get into a bad habit of trying to have faith in our own faith, instead of just trusting God's faithfulness. Don't despair about the faltering strength of your grip, but take courage of Him who's on the other end, His grip is stronger than you realize. Christ isn't a constant burden of fear and anxiety, He is the best comfort for broken and troubled souls. He paid the price already, and God absolutely knows everything about you and your situation. He will get you home. Try to rest, imagine as if He's carrying you, a confused little lamb, on His shoulders. Because He is.
