• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have mild aspergers I've been diagnosed and re-diagnosed more times then I can count. I been tryin to apply for help I need through Inland Regional but they are refusing to help me they say I'm not disabled enough and cause of them I can't get the help I need. I went to a rehab for help and they honestly wanted to help me but without Inland Regional backing there is nothing they can do for me. So I'm looking for help that's out there that I can get without Inland Regional because they are refusing to help me at all. So I been searching the internet and found a place that covers all the help I need plus other stuff I didn't even think would be available for me and as far as I know I don't need Inland Regional to get in there. It's a group home for people who have mild Aspergers like me I went through the site here's the link Marbridge: Residential Programs for Asperger?s, Jobs for People with Asperger?s Syndrome - Marbridge I love it already it looks fantastic there is only one thing I see wrong with it. It's in Austin Texas and I'm in southern California. So if I went there not only would I be moving away from immediate family but moving away from my Church family to. I wanna find a place like that that's closer to me but I haven't had any luck so far. So far all the supported living and all that stuff that I have found that's in California is for severly autistic people and gotta have Inland Regional backing to get in there. I would appreciate it if anyone knew of any other places that are in California that are like the one in the link that I don't need Inland Regional to get into if anyone knows a place like that please let me know. Also please share your thoughts opinions on the place in the link above what do you think of it please share.

The best advice that I can offer is to consult an SSI/SSDI [disability] attorney. Many do not charge you directly, but take their pay from the system, if they win. Their services include appeals, which they fully expect to do.

It won't work for everyone, but it is your best chance in the system.

Good luck getting a job. I never had a job but I've heard it's tough for us Aspies. You seem to have a particularly severe AS, if you're looking into getting some program to help you.

I'd suggest trying to work with some therapists or something to help with the social anxiety I assume you have. That way you have more job options and won't have to necessarily rely on Inland Regional.

I'm from a place with ZERO social services due to the extreme conservatism of the state, and plus I can manage people, provided that they stay predictable (not trying to make you feel bad or anything). You're very fortunate to find a service that will help. I sure wish I could have had that stuff.

I'd recommend not moving. As much as I'd love to leave my neck of the woods and see the world, I don't think I'd enjoy leaving everyone I know behind all of a sudden just so that I can get a job that accommodates the way I think. So I hope you can find some way to get a good job AND stay where you live.

Also, try that lawyer thing Sabertooth suggests. Although personally I don't see how AS is a disability. I guess it's a disability when it's convenient for us Aspies, and not a disability when we need to "act normal" ;) :p

It isn't a disability. It is a handicap. In this economy, there isn't much difference between the two. (I was very employable in a seller's market [as programmer/technologist].)

Deaf job hunters probably experience similar exclusion. Why would an employer consider wasting resources on a high-maintenance employee when there is so many low-maintenance candidates standing in the same line?

Eh, at my age I'll take whatever jobs I can get. I don't want to go around and make people pity me or give me special treatment because my brain works differently than theirs. I don't WANT to work at a McDonald's or at cubicle in some dull office, but I'll do it if I have to until my boss fires me. I'd tell my employer that I have Asperger's and what that means, but if there wasn't much he could do I'd just suck it up and work.

Handicap = hindrance. Having to live with this [social] hindrance makes us a hindrance to many routine processes. Those who seek our niche abilities are willing to make those concessions (and expect to). That is not the same as being disabled/unable.

There is an interesting work going on in the Chicago area along those lines.

If you can make that work, more power to you.

Repeated wipe-outs (if you can't), however, look bad on a resume'.
It is better, in the long run, to be selective about the kinds of employment you are willing to accept.

I see what you mean, but I just don't feel like it's right for me to go around admitting that I'm socially handicapped. I'd rather just get a job that's appropriate for me, and I'm confident that there's something I can do.
