Many of my hindu friends as I come from India who claimed to have read bible tell me that The bible is filled with full of violence and sex,Being a believer i have read 95% of bible,And when i read it,There was not that sort of violence,Although they can be counted to be a little blood gore,I dont find it offensive,Then why should really people claim such a lie,As God totally became a man in new testament and he took our sins on the cross,And Jesus himself in new testament heavy patience ,And again I did not find any much of sexual content either in bible,What is the need for carrying such a false claim ,If there is any violent or haphazard sexual content in bible please say where it is?

It is important to begin building your faith, If you look at the ministry of Jesus, how many times did he say, "Oh, ye of little faith?"

There is a lot of killing and other sins in the Bible.
But, there's a difference between prescription and description.
None the less, God did prescribe killings by humans too.
But once you realize a lot of that was eradication of 'giants' or Nephilim, it's not hard to see the necessity of that.
However, that still leaves a considerable amount of brutal killings endorsed or commanded to humans by God.
I personally have a hard time accepting these things, and i assume many Christians also have a hard time accepting it.
But i trust one day i will understand why this was apparently necessary or allowed etcetera.

I can only pray people won't lose faith over it.

Hi Kirthika,

Thanks for this post. I first became an altar boy when I was very young - about 5 or 6 and the very first name I heard mentioned by my priests and at least two bishops was Richard Dawkins. It was in a very bad context. He had written a book called The God Delusion which (even at that age when I could barely read) my vicar warned me not to ever lay my hands on. He said someone in the US shot himself dead after reading the book. When I was about 8 years old, I happened to be in a book shop when I decided to look for this forbidden book. I found it and I read the first few pages. I found Dawkins to be quite a funny chap and he wrote in an easy style so I read on. I had a shock of my life when I came to the part when he blasphemed God and called him names that included murderer, ethnic cleanser, etc. I wanted to put down the book but then I realised that Dawkins was going to justify what he had said of God and I thought I might as well read on to see how anybody could justify such a vile accusation against Almighty God.

Dawkins started to quote the Bible - verses that I had never heard in church even though I was a pious altar boy. I thought he lied and made up those verses. I took the book to a Bible sold in the book shop and sure enough every citation of the Bible he made was 100% accurate. For the first time, I read about how killing all the Midianites except the prepubescent girls "who could be used as the soldiers pleased" was the right thing to do. I read horrendous stories about how 42 young boys who laughed at a prophet for being bald were punished by God who sent two she-bears to tear them all up into pieces. It went on and on, at the end of which I was almost in tears. I realised that Dawkins' accusation of God was not done unadvisedly. I wanted to buy the book but I didn't have enough money. The next day, I went to the book shop again with money from my mum and bought the book and read it.

So, when your friends say that the Bible is full of violence and sex, they are right. I am now older and wiser and I have read many other scholars and I understand why the OT writers wrote the way they did. You mustn't take all the stories as totally true. They were writing from their own blood-thirsty culture (the early Jews were a nomadic pillaging tribe - think of Genghiz Khan of the Mongols). So they wrote nasty things about God but that's how they see God - through their own blood-thirsty and violent lens.

In the New Testament, people had become more civilised and so all the barbaric stories are forgotten.

Hope the above helps.

Cheers,

St Truth

song of Solomon will do nicely for the sex part.

The Bible is a collection of 66 (if you are Protestant) books written by 40+ authors from different cultures spanning 1500 years. They had freedom to write in styles consistent with their fellow authors from their culture. They have freedom to use literary devices just like authors use today. They recorded human activity very transparently, and guess what people do lots of things they were not designed to do (sin). The Bible is very transparent about these actions.

Don't let your friends create a straw man version of the Bible and then attack it. Doubt they could tell you much at all about the Bible. Next time they tell you , "I have read the Bible," ask them to name some of the main unifying themes, just 3 or 4. Bet they are going to make up a bunch of ...well you know.
