We've always explained that God plants them inside the mommy's tummy--and we tell them that before they even ask--it's just a fact of life. And it's true--Scripture says that the seed is "planted" in the womb when it speaks literally of conception. The children understand the seed/garden concept already, and so have always been very satisfied.
My oldest (6) understands more about seeds/genetics from watching Nature shows we've rented from the library, and from our own growing experiments as well as from the animals we have (and the wild ones that walk through our land)--we discuss how animals specifically plant their seed (that conversation came up thanks to a nature movie about tigers! Was it ever graphic!!!), how plants reproduce via seed, etc., and so there's never been much wondering about specific "forms" of planting.
When those questions come (regarding HUMAN specifics), we'll answer them with specifics. But when the children are little, generalities are all that's needed. And I think the biggest thing that must be specified is simply that GOD does the planting.
Blessings,
Molly
