  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I left the few friends that I had back in high school. They weren't great guys, but they were sometimes fun to hang out with. When the starting drinking, I stopped hanging out with them because I hate alcohol.

I hate the fact that everybody in college drinks.

I hate the fact that I've got nothing to do on weekends because I chose not to drink.

I hate the fact that everyone talks about me behind my back saying "we gotta get that kid drunk."

I hate the fact that I get woken up in the middle of the night almost every day because of some drunk guys on my floor.

I hate when my roomate comes back on weekends smelling like vomit.

I hate when he stumbles around and knocks stuff over.

I hate beer companies that advertise alcohol as the most fun you will ever have.

I hate the fact that alcohol ruins so many lives.

I hate the fact that so many people are alcoholics.

I hate the fact that so many women are raped by drunk guys.

I hate the fact that so many children are abused physically or mentally by drunk parents.

I hate the fact that so many people are killed by wreckless drunk drivers.

I hate alcohol.

We are voting on whether or not alcohol should be sold on Sundays in my city on election day. I will be voting that it won't. It's easy enough to by on other days anyway.

That's the way it was when I was in college too, DreamTheater. I was part of the problem the first half of the first year, I was there, but was redeemed at Christmas. I pray your life has an impact on those around you. I'm sure it will.

Good for you. It takes a strong man to change paths like that.

By the way, every time I see your avatar, it gives me a yearning to go out west. :)

Unfortunately, some people never outgrow this college problem. :( DT, is there a young people's group that you could get involved in. My younger sisters in law have made many friends in their youth group. Now they get together for soccer games, go to adoration, have swimming parties. They are both in college. They don't go away to college however. They were homeschooled but I wonder if you could find something similar?

We have a law like that and it's just silly. If you want to get trashed on Sunday, just buy it on Saturday night or go to the grocery store and buy some 3.2 beer.

I had a similiar experience in college that like though DT. People would drink constantly and scream up and down the halls at all hours, playing loud music at all hours. The RA only cared about pot and even then that was when you could smell it in the halls... and then he would only mention it during the monthly meetings that we shouldn't do it, shesh.

I went to a different college that didn't allow any alcohol on campus and was in an upperclassman dorm... extremely quiet.

Well, alchohol is not inherently evil. Abusing alchohol by getting drunk is. Remember that Jesus' first miracle was turning water into wine at a party. He drank alcohol and chose wine to be the substance that he would turn into his very blood. There's a line in a psalm that praises God for giving us wine, which makes us happy.

In countries with Catholic cultures, they are much better at enjoying alcohol properly. They don't drink to get drunk, but they'll have a drink with their meal. It's a matter of enjoying life. Even the kids drink (legally), but they don't get drunk. All of your problems with alcohol are not really problems with alcohol, but with drunkenness.

If you feel that you wouldn't be able to drink without getting drunk, then I definitely wouldn't drink if I were you. But there is nothing wrong with going out with your friends and having a couple of drinks. Most of my friends get drunk, and sometimes I find it difficult to drink with them because I am tempted to get drunk. If my prayer life is strong, I am generally not strongly tempted, and I have a good time. I know other people that just like to go out and drink in moderation, and it is great to have a couple drinks with them. There is something about alchohol that is good, leads us to enjoy life, and praise God for it. Remember that Jesus, our perfect example of humanity, drank in moderation with His friends.

By the way, my college has a great Catholic Campus Center where I've met some really good people to hang out with. Maybe you could look into getting involved if your school has one.

The pain that comes from alcohol far outweighs the enjoyment of an occasional drink.

Hi DT

execllent post. Since i was one of those drunken kids in my younger years. Those were also years that I lapsed in my faith. I wished that I had the same wisdom back then as you do now.

ALso i wanted to mentioned that at college I had taken a class "Drugs and Behavior" We went into some details as to how certain legal and illigal drugs worked. Such cocaine, marijuana, LSD, XTC and alchohol. Out of all these alchohol was the worst. Where as the others only affacted your brain (not that's good) and can do irreperable damage, alchohol affects all of your body tissues. It affects bones, muscles, brain, nerves, skin.

Very well said. Alcohol is not inherently evil. There are many who choose to abuse it and for them it becomes a vehicle of evil, but there are many among us who choose not to abuse it and for us it is not a vehicle of evil. It is so very easy to place the blame on an inanimate object rather than take individual responsibility for our actions.
