I finally finished a chapter of the bible. The NT is definitely easier to understand than the OT, which I shall read second. Have 2 questions about the Book of Matthew:

When Jesus was imprisoned before crucifiction, why did the multitudes say it wasn't Christ? How would this happen when Peter said he would not.

Why is it called the book of Matthew? Where is Matthew?

Thanks,

BG

I'm not quite sure whether I understand your first question.

As for your second, it is traditional that Matthew (also called Levi the tax collector, see chapter 9) originally wrote this gospel. The oldest tradition says he wrote in Hebrew, but we do not have a Hebrew or Aramaic version today. Probably the gospel we have, written in Greek, was written by someone else who was part of Matthew's community or based, at least in large part, on something Matthew wrote in another language.

Wow, I can't believe I forgot that. I've been wondering where Matthew was during this whole deal (Since I know Luke investigated deeply into this entire ordeal, John's an Apostle, and Mark was Peter's interpreter and the such).

While I am not the original thread creator, I thank you for reminding me where Matthew was during this.

I'm not sure I understand the question but the crowds shouting crucify him were being prompted by Jesus enemies. Now as far as Peter's denial (if that's what you mean) it almost comical. Peter just hours earlier had been ready to take on 1,000 Roman soilders with a pocket knife but Jesus had said Peter would deny him. John who knew the high priest was there for the trial and sent a servant girl to tell Peter to come inside. Peter, now scared to death, denied that he even knew Jesus. He is ready to take on 1,000 Roman soilders,(who would have killed him), with a pocket knife. Then he is scared to death by a little girl, who was no threat to him at all. It's at the same time one of the most comic and heart rending stories in the NT.

Grace and peace,
Mark

Matthew is arguably my current favorite Gospel of the four. I'm in the process of reading it for the second time and I love the parables.

For your first question, Jesus knows everyone's hearts and so that explains "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times" and for your information, Peter is just like us. However, I didn't do an in-depth study on this or anything so I'm unable to elaborate any further than that :sigh:

as for Matthew, it's called the book of Matthew because Matthew the publican, disciple of Christ wrote it. Where Matthew is -- "As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him." - Matthew 9:9

There's not much known about his career except that he preached in Judea and then was martyred in Ethiopia by being axed to death.
