  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't know if it goes in this forum but...

It's not against the Bible to study other religions right? I like reading about other religions and I'm really interested in Wicca, but I've never practiced anything and I don't plan on practicing them either. I like to have answers about other religions when I tell people about Christianity. But it seems that everyone else (Christians expecially) thinks if you know about the religion it is automaticly means you can't be Christian. So I guess my question is...I still can preach Christianity even if I read about other religions?

And it is really hard to believe in Christianity when there are so many hypocrites in the Churchs, in...everywhere. It seems to me Christianity has the most hypocrites...

I see nothing wrong with learning about other religions and/or cultures.

If we're to preach the Good News, how can we answer the tough questions people ask if we don't have our information, regarding the differences between the religions?

But for me, I'd be in prayer first before I read - that's just me. :)

It is not wrong by any means to study other religions. In fact, I would highly recomend building a strong knowledge of the basics from several world religions so you are aware of how they differ from Christianity. At every Christ In Youth (CIY) conference I attend there are classes about other religions. Being prepared and informed about other religions can make the process of evangelizing much easier for you.

However, like blindfaith said, this must be done with great care and lots of prayer. The purpose of studying other religions is to educate yourself and simply that. Just remember that. :)

I went to a CIY in Colorado last year and we're going to one in Tennesse this year. Anyways, I went to a class on Witchcraft and the Occult and all the teacher said is Harry Potter is bad and none of us should read it...hopefully Tennessee has better classes...

read my post in the bigot thread in this forum.
I think it is our job to be prepared to talk to people of other religions.
I will say this though...do not take an unhealthy interest in what you are studying.

I take an interest, I don't consider it "unhealthy" tho...

An interesting question. I find myself reading about Buddism simply to see how it is wrong against God's truth. One thing you must take heed is that the Bible warns Christains not to follow false doctrine (I have read specific verses, but I am unable to find them right now). Regardless of your reason, just keep in mind the warning Paul gives:

Colossians 2:8: "Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ." If it does not have Christ (which is anything other than Christianity), then it is false. So as you read these religions keep in mind that they are not God's truths, but truth according to man or simply false.

You have an interest in searching these other religions but the rather the desire should go to searching God's Word rather than wasting breath on the false doctrine of men.

1 Peter 2:2: "As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow therby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious."

there is nothing wrong with educating yourself on other religions. I have sometimes studied Islam and plan to do it more in the future as God has called me to later be a missionary in Muslim lands.

With that said, I would be very, very, VERY careful with Wicca. Be sure you are strong in your Christian faith, because it can really mess with you.
I have been very cautious about delving to deeply into the Qur'an, before I have a really, really concrete knowledge of the Bible.

I could be wrong, and I'm not trying to down you . . . but it sounds to me, from what you posted, than you may be getting into some risks. Be sure you are doing it just to be able to minister to people of other religions, and not just to find out about it and try out what another religion is like. It sounds to me, from what you said about hypocrites, that you may be trying to find reasons to gradually leave Christianity . . . even subconciously. And your username certainly didn't hinder me from coming to that conclusion.

I'm apologize if I read you wrong or underestimated your faith. I'm just trying to help, and quite frankly, to protect you. Wicca can be very dangerous. It can open the doors to all kinds of very real demonic influences. I'm not just saying this like some old conservative who is just afraid of other religions. I'm saying it because it's true.

Wicca can be very attractive because it gives people "power" and it gives them a sense of uniqueness. I don't doubt that the people who practice it are sincere, but Wicca does not provide salvation. It can only draw you away from God and fom true joy.

I also sympathize with your unhappiness about hypocrites. Just remember that there will always be hypocrites in religions, and that none of us are perfect. The Bible is very honest and does not hesitate to point out that fact. Also remember that the people Jesus' was the toughest on were the hypocrites. Hypocrisy is always a bad thing, but it doesn't make a religion untrue. There are many other reasons to believe Christianity is true. It's the only religion ever that is based on solid historial facts, archaeological and scientific evidence, and direct eyewitness reports. If you want more information on all that kind of stuff feel free to ask me.

I think the reason you will find more hypocrites in Christianity than in Wicca is this: since our society is mostly Christian, and therefore since most people are born into Christian families, this provides the chance that many people will grow up as Christians, and consider themselves Christians because of that, but will go off on their own lives and never really care about Jesus Christ, while at the same time still considering themselves believing "Christians," simply because they were brought up that way.

Wicca, on the other hand, is a religion that VERY FEW people are actually born into, at least compared to Christianity. Because of this, if someone wants to be Wicca, they have to make a conscious choice to join that religion. And if you consiously make that choice . . . chances are you are going to be serious and sincere about it. Why would someone DECIDE to be Wicca if they didn't mean it?

Again, Christianity is different because so many people can be born "Christian" and therefore still consider themselves such, but never really make a conscious choice to be serious about their faith. That's just because of our society. But there are SOOOOOOO many deeply sincere Christians out there too.

Anyway, it's fine to know what you are talking about when you minister to someone of another religion, but again, be very careful.

I have seen Christian books on the witchcraft occult before that might be good. They looked serious, honest, and informative . . . they looked pretty substantial, you know. They were more than just, "this is bad, so stay away." Although that is true, the book probably gives detailed reasons. There are also probably some former-Wicca-turned-Christian people out there who could help you, or maybe even some of them have written books. I'll research that for you. I'm sure they would know alot, and could be honest from a Christian perspective.

That's what I would recommend first. I wouldn't go out and pick up a handbook on casting spells. I doubt very seriously that it would help you learn anything useful at all. In my humble opinion, it can only cause danger. Again, I'm not trying to accuse you, but just in case: if you are trying to find reasons that say it's ok to remain a believing Christian but be a witch at the same time, it won't work. Wicca cannot offer you anything that God can't. You don't need it. It will only lead to some horrible, horrible things. The Bible is very clear on all of that. I can elaborate later if you want.

But good luck, I'll research some things for you. I respect your courage to post about this.

God Bless You
Just Really Does LOVE YOU . . . ALOT :)

funny :) i read the Bible to determine how it's incorrect with regards to the Truth of the Dharma.

actually, i'm already aware of that bit.

there is no point, really, in reading another religious text to determine that it doesn't agree with yours.. though i can see the value in understanding why it doesn't so that you can explain why it's invalid.

good luck in your self-assigned task!

Just a quick note to everyone;

Please re-read the forum rules. This is not a specific room for debate, but for discussion. In the Questions about Christianity, only Staff and Christians are allowed to answer. Naturally we encourage seekers to ask - but nonbelievers are not allowed to answer in this specific forum.

Thank you!!

Oh heh, the username is from a book I was reading at the time. "Witchbaby" by Francesca Lia Block. She's a good writer. Anywho.

I want to be Christian...I just keep questioning everything about it. And it seems my whole youth group except for two people are hypocrites. Which doesn't exactly make me love the Christian ways. And how people say..."Don't do *insert bad thing here* at Church." Why does it matter if it's in a Church or not? Shouldn't you act the same everywhere?
I dunno.
I'm just confused... :(

Personally, I"m of the thought process that if you shouldn't do it in church...you shouldn't do it at all. Like you said, we should act the same everywhere we go. But that's just me. :)

Please don't look at other people, it is Christ that you need to be looking at. People are not perfect, and they will disappoint you, even Christians can be ugly people. Hopefully they repent of their wrong doings, but if not, it is between them and the Lord.. Of course you could point things out to them in a loving way and let them know what you feel.

If you want to be a Christian, all you have to do is ask Jesus to come into your heart, repent of all your sins and tell Him you want Him to be your Lord and Saviour..

I personally wouldn't be reading books about witchcraft at this time in your life... If you are not with Christ then it is Satan that is leading you to these other books, Satan is the author of confusion and he will do what ever he can to keep you from the Lord...
Please for now, just read your Bible, ask the Lord to give you understanding of His Word... Read all of the new testament first.. Then read the old testament..

Love in Christ,
Nita

No it's not against my Chrisianity to study religion. I'll tell you why....

When I first became saved I was 15 and staying in Ohio (US) with some relatives. For some reason God led me to study the Catholic religion, it's origins, beliefs, etc. Well when I came back to Massachusetts I found that my study helped me to witness to Catholics. You have to be careful though, make sure you have the armour of God on when you do this. Sometimes you can fall into a trap with an open heart and not even realize it. If you read the new testamant you will find that one of God's greatest diciples knew of religion and was able to use his knowledge to debate with people of different religions. His name was Paul. Very educated, very prominent in his time.
