  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

When I say "never should have existed" I was only meaning in the sense of whether the children were "technically supposed to exist" if their parents weren't supposed to come together.
That could be said in cases of rape, incest, etc. I know, it’s sad.

I have to say, this response might be more helpful than I thought. I'm kind of glad I gave it. It came at random in a head that is being murdered by the flu or covid.
Do you have any at home Covid test kits? I’ve had a tummy issue since last night.

Darn, no I don't.

The reason I think it's Covid is because I had a loss of taste and smell or about a day or two (it's not all over), and I had the run-of-the-mill cold symptoms (stuffy/runny nose, cough, nasal congestion) but I also had the chills/fever/body aches. I think it's the taste/smell thing that makes me believe it was Covid over the regular flu, but who knows. I'm only in my 3rd day and I'm still feeling like garbage. :sigh:

Thank you (collectively) for your answers. I am not trying to bring up whether children are legitimate or not legitimate. Rather I was trying to ask, how can God decree that I am supposed to exist even if my parents were not supposed to come together?
Generally (maybe not specifically in every case) the parents ARE supposed to come together, but properly. Committed, lifelong, sacramental, and all of that.

I'm thankful for all responses. This issue, when you think about it too much, can feel weird IMHO. I don't want to upset anyone, especially Michie, lol.
Don’t worry about upsetting me. I’m your friend. Not your taskmaster.

(This is anecdotal)

If your parents' marriage was invalid, how does it not follow that the children of that marriage are "not supposed to be here"? I'm struggling not to come to any other conclusion. I know they may say "it's a mystery."
You are a beloved child of God by Holy Baptism. How anyone was conceived, even if it was IVF or out of wedlock, it still a human and loved immensely by God. Period.

My cousin had his son first, got married to his wife in the Catholic Church in the 1990s after the birth of his son. Eventually, they left the Catholic Church, found their own home Church, and started an evangelical non-denominational Church with another family. I attended their son's wedding a few years ago that took place in a Baptist Church. He may have been baptized Catholic as a baby, but was never practicing.

Is that considered an invalid marriage? Or am I overthinking it?

My cousin is the mother via IVF of her friends twins. They are biologically hers (my cousin's and her friend's husband) since her friend could no longer have children.

That's a mortal sin, correct?

The whole thing sounds invalid to me, lol. I don't know but I'd be surprised if it was valid.

I think so :(
@Lady Bug Sorry for asking so many questions. I don't want to hijack your thread.

My apologies.
It's ok, it was thought-provoking.

That’s my understanding. You can’t farm out women to carry children IVF and all that comes along with that. I suppose it would depend on the participant’s understanding in a Catholic setting. Many of these carriers/ incubators are victims of this situation.

My cousin’s son, who is three years older than me, got married by his father (my cousin), his father in law, and a Baptist minister. My cousin now has 4 grandchildren through him, all within a span of 6 years.

Yes. My other cousin who had twins, who are now in their 20s, is not a practicing Christian. She’s pro LGBT and pro abortion. Sadly, her mother, my aunt, died in 2011 completely separated from the Church. My aunt refused to get an annulment when she married her second husband (also deceased) and never participated in the sacraments again. :(

Thank you for your kindness!

For the record, I am 30, I have several first cousins who are already grandparents, and several of my cousin’s on my dad’s side have children older than me.

With the exception of a few, most of my cousins on my dad’s side are old enough to be my parents. Only 4 or so aren’t. (I have 39 first cousins total, 24 on dad’s side, 15 on mom’s, possibly 40 (long story), 1 is deceased)

She’s non-practicing. So is her sister, who is a cancer survivor. They are both in their upper 50s. My aunt and uncle, their mother (my dad’s sister) and step father died without the sacraments. So did their biological father, whom I never met, and whom they had zero contact with.

I pray daily for their conversion.

Sigh
