  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

We have both a traditional Kindle with keyboard and a Kindle Fire. The traditional Kindle requires a light. We know of no way to get it to light itself. IT is nice, easy to read, and you can find many free or very inexpensive books on Amazon and other sites. Smashwords, for example, has books in many formats, including the Mobi which works on Kindle, and has free or cheap books. You can also read pdf documents on there but they do not work as well. The Fire has its own lighting, like a tablet or computer. It has color and very fun to read in bed. the traditional Kindle battery lasts about a month, whereas you will get 4-6 hours out of the Fire and it can take 4 hrs to recharge. Kindles cannot read any other formats besides the mobi, pdf, or the proprietary Kindle format (AZW). We have been very happy with both models. Please check out our blog, elkjerkyforthesoul at wordpress. We have books for sale on Amazon, Smashwords, Barnes and Noble, iBook store. They are linked down the right side of the page.

The traditional kindle has no light in it. The screen is a technology which does not need light (The Fire's screen does need it) and that's one reason why the battery lasts and lasts and lasts.
You can do as my wife and I have, and get a cover with a light. Like this:

I have a black cover, she has an orange one. It's really neat.

can u surf the web and watch netfix too?

A classic kindle uses technology made for reading. The screen will not update fast enough to watch movies. Each image will linger, and then shift as you click. The genius of it is that the device only uses electricity as it changes the image, not at any other time. So, the battery can be very small and even so last for months. As opposed to a day or a few hours for a kindle fire.

You CAN surf the web on classic kindles. But you can't watch movies. And, they are black and white

The Kindle FIRE CAN watch movies. BUT: It's not as comfortable to read on, nor as good for your eyes. No LCD or OLED screen is. And anything you can watch a movie on is such a screen. Furthermore the battery does not last nearly as long.

The technology classic kindles use is called E-ink. You can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E_Ink

I have a Kindle 3. I bought it in Oct 2010.

I have about 60 books on it. A lot of them are free or very old. It is nice to be browsing the internet and find a book you want and then buy it and be reading it in about 2 minutes.

For study books I would rather have paper. But books I read straight through Kindle is great.

I've never had, used or desired a Kindle! There is a great and not much more expensive solution to use the Bible and related literature: the Barnes n' Noble Nook HD 8 GB or 16 GB. The one with larger memory is needed if You have a very large library in it. It has recently become compatible with the Bible study software Logos.com. Source: Barnes & Noble turns its Nook HD line into full-powered Android tablets | ZDNet
The Nook HD is on a sale until Father's Day June 16 2013: NOOK® by BARNES & NOBLE, World's largest bookstore - Barnes & Noble ... unfortunately those don't ship to the whole world.
There is also one used for sale in the UK (used once) for £93 which ships only within the U.K.: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Barnes-Nook...F8&qid=1370857826&sr=1-17&keywords=nook+hd+16

If there's any software questions (and I don't mean Android, I mean Logos) or book questions, ask me by PM!

I would rather support Barnes n' Noble than Amazon:
Novels read like a dream on the kindle! The bible? not so well or any book that requires appendix use, chapter lists, notes, study...

I bought a Kindle keyboard some years back. Love it to bits.

Recently got a Kindle 5 for my father, which is much lighter and convinced my aunt and another friend to get them as well. Not that they needed much convincing. I just showed the Kindle to them and being avid readers, both were sold on the spot, lol.

It's great for people who love to read plain text, and I like it because of the e-ink technology, which is easy on the eyes, especially for extended reading periods. I'm thinking of getting a paperwhite later...
