  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"God" is not a name, but a title. Even if "we" sometimes use it to describe God the Father, it is not his name..

It's kinda like saying King Edward.. "King" is not the Kings name Edward is. King is his title, but in calling him King you would not be dishonoring him.. The same is true with "The trinity" of God. You can use the term "God" to describe any one of them, because all are 100% God. We and most of history tend to refer to the "Father" as God, and the "Son" as Jesus, and the Holy Spirit as The Holy Spirit.

So God by saying, Let's make man in "Our" own image, is referring to the God head or "Trinity" or all three distinct personalities of the one God (Remember title not name) saying lets make man to look and react like we would..

Ok after looking at your post Drich and looking up trinity in wikipedia it is my understanding that their is 3 beings. The holy sprit,father,and Jesus which is the son. However if you look at this literaly Jesus can not be the son of god because he had a human mother and a human father. Jesus is not the son of God because God is not human. Therefore since Jesus is not the son of god, then God is the not the father. The holy spirit is the only form of god. God only has one personality. God does not have multiple personalities disorder. So if god is real he is not in solid form. therefore he is not a he but simply it. Jesus was a jewish rabah. He had a human father and a female mother. He was a prophet nothing more nothing less. So there is father and there is not son. So please tell me what else our could refer to if anything else at all.

We have assigned these titles to the presents of God so as to better relate and understand the distinct personalities of God.. You are right if you hold these personalities of God to the strictest form of our popular cultures understanding of their definitions.. God the "father" isn't an earthly father, nor is Jesus an earthly "son."

But have you considered that Maybe instead of God emulating what a father is here in this life, or Jesus emulating what it is to be a son here in this life, that in fact it is us who emulate God and his qualities as a father?? Or God as a son???

Think about what does a good father do, or what is his responsibilities? He cares for and protects his "house hold" He directs and sets the tempo for the family.. Now what about the son? He listens and obeys his father, in the same way a good father will respect and honor his son..

Maybe this is where we get the Idea of what it is to be Father and son.. And for whatever reason the world chooses to look at linage or birth order to determine these roles..

One more thing that maybe you still are missing.. God is not the deities Name. It is a title that describes there collective function.. Just because you may refer to God and think of an old man sitting on a throne with a long white beard doesn't make it so.. Because it "God" is a title, and not a name, it would make it plausible for different separate deities to be united in one function or collectively hold one Job as The God. Or The Ruler..

Not necessarily. In fact, according to the Bible there are all kinds of spiritual beings including, for example, angels and demons. But in this case, as has been previously stated, it is generally held that the Bible is referring to the three persona of the Trinity. The concept of the Trinity is very difficult to grasp and is the subject of many forum discussions!

But I don't think you need to look for anything deeper than to consider the "our" to mean God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. This phrase in Genesis (which is actually Gen 1:26, not 2:26) points to the existence of Christ in heaven even before his birth as a human.

I think a more important point to think about here, rather than who these beings are, would be to think what "in our image" means. Does it mean God is human-shaped? Or does it refer to our human characteristics of love, conscience, self-awareness, capability of distinguishing good from bad, etc.

What do you think "image" means here?

If you believe that Jesus was nothing more than a prophet then you have many more and greater problem verses in the bible than the issue on "our" in Gen 1:26.
For example:
The appearances of the resurrected Jesus to over 500 people after his crucifixion (1 Cor 15:6)

"Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time....." Heb 9:28

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning" John 1:1-2

The last of these also gives a biblical explanation to the "our" in your original query concerning Gen 1:26.
