That's a lot of pets. How will you be able to care for all of them and buy food and provide vet care for 8 pets? If you're living at home and your parents will be helping you I guess I'd ask them for their opinion on what kind of dog they want to help raise. If you're on your own in this venture then you should get some books about dog breeds at the library and read about it. Or look at the AKC's website.

The only thing we can do here is give common sense advice or peronal opinions (which are usually pretty subjective). So here's my common sense advice and personal opinion. Don't get a particular breed of dog just because of its cuteness factor. The cutest dogs are usually the most challenging to own and keep healthy - hairless dogs, Shar peis, super-long-haired breeds, dalmatians, Chows. If you're going off to college in a couple years, keep in mind can you bring your dog with you, and take care of it? Who will care for it, who will walk it, etc, etc.

Don't make a decision to get a dog lightly. One dog requires close to the same amout of attention as all of your cats combined.

7 cats, huh? Well, even if you get a purebred that normally get alongs with cats, you're still gambling, so to speak. Your best bet is to go to a shelter and find out which dogs or puppies have had a history of living with cats. Most shelters will have info right on the front of their kennel cages about that. If not, ask somebody working/volunteering there.

If you have your heart set on a purebred, well, I do believe that animal.discovery.com has a dog breed quiz under pet selector. You select criteria and it gives you compatible dog breeds. This would at least narrow down the list and cut out the dogs that would be totally wrong, but if you want a pedigreed canine, it would be best to do lots of research from there: pures often are susceptible to specific health problems and may have other special needs. Just don't dive into it, and avoid newspaper pures ("backyard breeders") or pet shops (puppy mills = :( )

Ok i got a dog from the pound and on his tag it said he got along with animals but in fact i was quite the oppsite. I would incourage that u be careful if ur gonna get a dog from the pound because the stuff on the card might be false. At the pound i went to they let u walk the the dog so see if u can do that it might help u choose.
