I am starting to hate school. It is very difficult for me to process information. I know that the teachers are not there to baby me; but sometimes I don't understand what the instructors want in an assignment. And there are some subjects that I understand easily, I just don't understand the homework. I don't ask for clarification from the instructors because I don't want to bother them, or them saying "I am not here to hold your hand." So I end up passing, but with a low grade. And eventually the lower it gets, the more I end getting a non-passing grade.

Before I even give you learning tips, you need to ask for clarification from the instructors, or make friends with people that are getting better marks. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Ask it during class, that is a good time to ask it.Or during their office hours, or email them. You have to move beyond how you think how you would look to people to get the job done.Especially if its a special class.

Now if its more of a generic class, like math or science, try looking for a tutor or a center in your college that offer that sort of help.Sometimes it could be how you're processing the info during class, and maybe you need to step back or how you are recording your info. In theory, stuff taught in class is whats addressed in the assignments. Are you taking adequent notes or are you processing the info well during class? Youtube different techniques, and review your notes early on so that you ask your questions early and get your assignment done.

At the end of the day, you are the one with the grade, they get their pay whether you pass or not, there is no one else to blame. You are an adult, so its your responsibility to make sure you are getting the stuff you need or put out the necessary effort to succeed. So if its something you need to succeed it, do what it takes. Sometime, when they see the effort to reach out to them, they will reciprocate that energy and make sure you do well, but you never know if you don't ask.

Make sure above all else, that you are going to God with your struggles. To remove that spirit of fear in your heart and give you the Word to overcome it. This is what help me move forward in my college years, God instill in me scriptures that gave me that boldness to just not care how I look or what they said (and they said ALOT about me) and at the end of the day, I did well and graduated. Im sure the skills I listed on my paper got me interviews, but it was that character God built in me during those years, that eventually landed me a job. I pray the same for you.

Be encouraged. Greater is He that is in you, than He that is in the world.(1 john 4:4)

Sorry to hear you're struggling. Don't be afraid to ask for clarification from teachers and even from classmates. That's what teachers are there for- to help you succeed :)
If it seems a little daunting to ask in person, maybe you can bring a classmate with you to ask after class. Or if your professor provided an email address to reach them, you can ask through there. Never be afraid to ask. A few years ago when I was in college, I'd equate the fact that I'm paying tuition money to having the right to get the help/assistance I truly need from my teachers. And I didn't care if I bothered them because in the end, they aren't bothered. So be encouraged and reach out.

oh jesse, I feel your pain!

For me, I had to come up with the courage to get tutoring from the special student needs center. they sent a volunteer student to my lectures, and they would not only take my notes for me, but explain to me what the directions were for the homework in case I didnt understand, just like you.

every school in america should have an ADA area for students with special needs. youre probably does too. I have learning disabilities-do you as well? I got extra tutoring and counseling to be supportive of my stress of going to college.

can you find out about this possible option for yourself?

you are not alone!!

I also digitally recorded every lecture beside my student taking notes for me.

I would re-listen to lecture 1-2 times! and also re-write my notes out too, in order to learn.

Well, my IQ is very low. And I process information very slowly.

And I think I can find out if this is possible for me.

Thank you so much @hope. This was very helpful.

Hi Jesse,

As a former short term college teacher (~ for two years), I can tell you that the professors SHOULD be there to assist students with clarifying at least some of what they want in their assignments as well as with explaining a few things to get you on your way. The good professors will do so; however, there are a few professors who are just in the teaching field to hear themselves speak. If you get one of the latter types of professors, then you may want to go to your college's learning assistance center, if they have one, and ask for some assistance.

Anyway, don't be afraid to briefly explain your situation to your professors. You don't have to give them your life story, of course, but you can at least let them know that you feel that at this moment in time you need some "extra" assistance and that you're wanting to know more about some points in the readings and/or the assignments.

You have good writing skills, and I imagine you actually have good communication ability, even though you feel your I.Q. is low at this moments in life. I think you can do the work. Those teachers should do their work in teaching. Don't be afraid to ask them for assistance, and if one of them comes across as a "yahoo," then go to the college's learning centers and seek further aid.

Prayers and Blessings,
2PhiloVoid

Have you ever received high grades? You made into college, so seems so. Learn to toss out the added stuff when you take notes. For example, what if I told you a helium-filled balloon went up in the air. Went on to tell you the color of it, the size of it and the shape of it. Is all of that important? No. Balloons come in various colors, shapes and sizes. What you want to know is, what made it lighter than air. What caused that balloon to rise? Helium is much lighter than air. This would be the key that the teacher would want the student to understand. This is the knowledge that will come in handy in the future.

Math can be done the same way. Get in your mind what is important to know. Such as: a + b = c....
a also then would equal c-b
change the operation type when you move across the equals sign
a=c-b
b=c-a

another one..... a x b=c
so....a=c divided by b.....as in changed the operation from multiplication to division when the b moved past the equals sign

These are very simple steps, but the patterns come in handy when trying to solve more involved equations.

Thank you very much.

Thank you very much. :)

You're welcome, I-1293!! And one more thing, depending upon the specific subject matter being explored in your class, you can sometimes find websites online that are designed to help facilitate learning and/or providing insights (or even some tutoring of sorts) to help a person figure out various assigned questions and problems. So, if you have math questions, you can often find some exercises on line. If you have business class questions, you can likewise find some things online, and so on and so forth.

There might even be online communities or forums that are dedicated to certain subjects that you might find helpful in answering some of your questions in tackling your college assignments.

What classes are you taking at this moment, by the way, Jesse?

Peace,
2PhiloVoid

Ok. It looks like you've got your work cut out for you with those classes, Jesse. But, they should be the kind of thing that your professors, the college learning assistance department, and some online websites can help you with. Just inquire with all three sources.

Let me know how things go over the next week or two as you contact these sources. ;) And hang it there. College is a challenge for most everyone, but I know you can do it, too.

Peace,

I understand that school loathing. Be steadfast! Remember to always ask questions for clarification (being a good student is about being good at being dumb!). I always ask the stupidest questions in my classes (and embarrass myself). Real learning is about getting academically beat up. I love the Kahn academy epigram; "failing is another word for learning".
so be patient with yourself, don't let the smart guys get under your skin. Be thankful for every class you pass because in the end C's get degrees!
