Dear justaguy28,
Are you sorry about the way that you live your life? For so many years I looked at porn and stuff - it was good while I was watching it, but after the feelings died down I felt empty inside and guilty about how I had turned my back on Jesus and wilfully sinned. This lead me into repentence eventually. Of course, I fell occassionally and still do occassionally, but I know that I will be forgiven.
The first thing, I believe, that you need to come to the realisation of is that you're sorry for your sins and that you want to change your life for the better.
Friend, I don't know where you are with God, but once you genuinely repent, say that you're sorry for your sins, and ask for Jesus to forgive you, the Bible tells us that as far as the East is from the West, so far are your sins away from you. God's forgiven you and is ready to move on with you and take His relationship with you to a deeper and more meaningful and real level.
Then I suggest that you stay away from the places that will influence you to sin (e.g. bars and pubs, don't go out late at night and go walking around the streets next to 'pickup' areas, etc) and instead get involved in a Bible study group and grow your relationship with God. You see, there's God's part and there is your part to play. The Bible tells us to submit ourselves to God and to keep ourselves in God, resist the devil, and he will flee from us.
Submit yourself to God ... keep yourself in Him ... give Him your life to do with as He wishes. Sometimes the most effective prayer can be "Help!" It is often through these types of times in our lives that God's power is seen. Pray for His strength.
If you want to, you can fast to show God that you're serious about your relationship with Him. The fasting doesn't have to be from food, it can be from alcohol, for example. It is all about depriving the flesh of what it craves for and focusing on God. While doing it, focus on God and on Him alone. Read your Bible, pray, listen to Christian music; these are all methods of placing yourself at God's feet and in His presence. The Bible calls us to draw close to God and He will draw close to us. Now, that doesn't neccessarily mean that you can 'feel' Him (some can, others can't). I'm not a very emotional person, so God generally doesn't speak to me through my emotions as He may others. For example, at a Harvest crusade that I went to many new Christians around me had tears of joy in their eyes upon conversion while I felt no different, yet I know that something had changed inside of me when I rededicated my life to Him and His service.
You may have to get serious about your relationship with Him and take pro-active measures to solidify it and prevent sin from coming in.
Another idea is to have an accountability partner, such that when you feel like sinning, just call him up and talk about it. If you are 'addicted' to donuts, then don't go walking in front of cake shops looking at them, take another route if you have to that by-passes them.
In other words, don't place yourself in a position where you can be tempted. Paul exhorted young Timothy to flee from sexual sins and the same thing goes with you and I. When ever you feel like you could engage in a sexual sin with someone, then just do what Joseph did - get the hell outta there! Leave your drink if you're in a bar and go home and pray. The moment that you think I can handle this, the devil's got you right where he wants you.
If you have a problem with drinking, then seek help from AA or something like that.
One thing that I really suggest you seriously do is to talk to a pastor about your life and your spiritual life as well. My pastor, for example, is a pretty cool guy and he's more than happy to spend a few hours just talking about stuff and my spiritual life and giving me great Biblical advice and principles to help me out.
These are just some ideas that you may like to try; IMHO anyway.
I will pray that God will grant you the will and strength to live a life that shouts His fame. I pray that you will be set free from your burdens - that you will over come them with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Kind regards,
Tau Leader.
