  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am going to have an asthma attack if The Reader Alexis keeps this up!

O Constantinople! to Open on Broadway
June 4, 2004
New York, New York, USA — The hottest new show opening on Broadway this season is O Constantinople! — a light-hearted musical romp through the Council of Nicea.

A band of monks travels from barbarian Gaul to the Great City (“Follow the Yellow Brick Road”) for the First Ecumenical Council in 323. There they meet such celebrities as Arius (“It Ain’t Necessarily So”) and Athanasius (“I Believe”) and Nicholas of Myra in Lycia (“Jolly Old St. Nicholas”).

Amid the excitement and pageantry of the First Ecumenical Council (“What’s the Buzz?”), a young monk, also called Athanasius, wanders away from his companions and finds himself in the throne room of Constantine the Great (“Getting to Know You”). Thinking he is the other, famous Athanasius, Constantine greets him warmly (“Be Our Guest”) and quizzes him about the parties at odds at the council. Athanasius perceives the Emperor to be leaning toward the party of the Arians, and although he doesn’t know the famous theologian, the young monk supports his party at the council. He sees the meeting with Constantine as a way to influence the course of the proceedings for the good.

Merry mixups ensue, as the Athanasiuses cross paths without knowing it, Bishop Nicholas gets arrested (“The Rumble”), and the emperor decides to step back and let the bishops work it out (“Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat”).

Don’t miss the hit finale number, “Don’t Cry for Me, Constantinople.”

Capitalizing on the popularity of The DaVinci Code, O Constantinople! brings the fourth century to life in all its action, color and drama, with a lively score by Gus (“St. Romanos the Melodist”) Demotrides and book by Clive (“St. Dunsmore of the Hills”) Edgington. Don’t miss it.

Playing now through September.

Rambling reporter Jan Bear thanks Paul Blattner for bringing this Broadway musical to her attention.
