  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am curious ....

Do you use a Christmas tree outside of the the christian faith?

  • No, not a christian, don't use christmas trees.

  • Yes. not a christian, but use christmas trees during the holidays

Non Christian, and we still have a Christmas tree. As I've stated before, Christmas is largely a secular holiday nowadays. Its my experience few people celebrate it as the birth of Jesus, and most people celebrate it as 'Give stuff to each other' day.

We've had a Christmas tree every year, neither of my parents are religious but for some reason we celebrate Easter and Christmas.

Personally I dont care, free candy one month, free stuff the next, why complain?

Ok, so here's the deal. As of today, 90% of non christians, and quite a few pagans, have indeed, a tree of some sort to celebrate the "season of giving."..I am a Christian, celebrate Christ's birth and all. However, many...even most people celebrate the season with Santa Clause and Reindeer. Then, why OH WHY, is there any debate about the seperation church and state over a christmas tree, holiday tree or other greenery to celebrate the giving that happens around Santa Clause time. Jesus wasn't even born in wintertime. It is a choice by a few to celebrate Christ birth and only Christs birth on that day. Even most Christians teach Santa Clause as something to be believed in by children. Christmas is not necessarily a Christian holiday. On the contrary, it has been twisted to be Christian as far as the origins are concerned. It is, however a national tradition at the season. Bottom line..WHO CARES IF THERE IS A CHRISTMAS TREE IN A SCHOOL...AND WHY DID IT MEDIA ATTENTION?

If you have always had a Christmas tree, without celebrating Christmas, that's fine- but why is the name suddenly an issue? I mean, call it a Yule tree or a Hannukah tree if you like, but I don't see how it benefits anyone to pretend that all "holidays" are the same thing. Complete homegeneization of all human culture strikes me as a depressing goal.

Yeah well, that's not true. People can and have learned to get along with each other in the past. All it takes is a little bit of effort and understanding.

And trying to do in someone's traditions so both of you have the same ones does not constitute understanding.

My family is Catholic, and I have my own beliefs. We always do Christmas, Easter, etc, and I probably always will. Christmas does not have a Christian meaning in our house, but a meaning of a time to be with family, give gifts, and enjoy the music, food, etc.

It ain't the tree that should be offensive, it's the gifts under it. The gifts point to the gift of God's Son.

The tree is incidental and symbolically neutral.
