Welcome back, Peter.
Some words for you to ponder as you discern whether this Society of Saint Pius X is right for you, from St. Pope Pius X himself:
Remember that to be in communion with the Church, you must be in communion with Peter.
You're not supposed to be giving religous advice in this forum are you ?
Welcome Back PetertheRock?
Going SSPX are we? Well, (I advise caution, here please, be very careful that you do not drift into a schismatic mindset as some ueber-fringe SSPX-ers have de facto; but the SSPX is awesome, just not their illicitness; argh!) I must say: if you can make it, try going to an Fraternity of St. Peter run Tridentine-Mass parish if possible; however, as it appears that they're alacking of valid Novus Ordo Masses near you; you have the Holy See's permission to validly and licitly attend Society of Saint Pius X masses as a layman provided that you do not imbibe a schismatic attitude and drift into schism.
As a sidenote: the Four SSPX bishops were excommunicated; however, all the SSPX's priests are valid priest who may confer valid sacraments and are NOT excommunicated; but they're all suspended "A Divinis" and cannot licitly offer the sacraments of confession, etc.; except under grave necessity.
I am sorry that you have had such a difficult time with your job, PTR. I understand the turmoil involved in a mental breakdown. I really hope that you can recover and that you can find a better situation that allows you to be healthy.
As for NO Masses, sounds like the Masses you have experienced have been rather unfortunate. Around here, in my neighbourhood, we are extremely lucky to have some fabulous, faithful, dedicated priests who celebrate the Novus Ordo with a great deal of devotion and care. The present pastor of my parish has taken care to make small changes in the parish to move toward a more traditional atmosphere - the layout of the church itself is very 70s but the pastor has moved the large crucifix to a central position, he has placed the icons in a more prominent place, he has created a permanent baptismal area (prior to that we had a baptismal font on wheels - don't ask), etc. He has done great things for the parish and I am very grateful.
So you see, there are faithful priests who are able to celebrate the Novus Ordo with great reverence and respect, such that nothing is lost and it is neither "campy" nor inappropriate. You cannot paint an entire liturgical rite with the same brush.
Do you have any FSSP near you? (Fraternitas Sacerdotalis Sancti Petri) They are a priestly fraternity dedicated entirely to the celebration of the Tridentine rite, and they are in communion with the Church. We only have one FSSP Mass in this city and the priests drive in from two hours away every Sunday. It is really fabulous and very, very special.
Unfortunately no. When we were having problems getting priests to say the Latin Mass for us we approached the Bishop and we had an offer from the FSSP for a priest that would come here for free and say our Latin Mass but the Bishop refused this. At least he did find us a workable solution with our chaplaincy but the thing that gives me a bad taste in my mouth is he told us that we are entirely self sufficient and if we don't come up with the money (and I forget the exact figure but it's significant) then we don't get our Latin Masses. The money is for the priest salary and "rent" for the Church.
Uhm, Peter: NO! The Slaves of the Immaculate in Richmond are excommunicated and happen only to share the title as those communion with Rome. These Slaves of the Immaculate: http://www.saintbenedict.com/ are in communion with with the Holy See; those that are involved with the link you provided are schismatics. St. Benedict Center at St. Ann's in Massechusetts are fine; but the ones that you found in Richmond are schismatic: Avoid them! The ones involved with the link I provided you are in full communion with Rome and are normal status with regards to the Holy Catholic Church. Also, I am not attending the SSPX since there is are no Chapels around me. I think one of the reasons the Bishop gave us this Chaplaincy is because he did not want the SSPX coming to Maine. I think this is why even though we are short in what we are supposed to be coming up with for money there has been no threat of taking our Mass away.
I did apply for membership in the TO of the SSPX but since there is no SSPX priest for me to go to that isn't going to happen. Instead I am going to apply for another Third Order of the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. They don't have official approval of the Bishop yet but they believe in the strict interpratation of Only Catholics can be saved. extra ecclesiam nulla salus
Our Crusade was begun by Father Leonard Feeney, who strove to combat the liberalizing of Catholic dogma which he saw as a major impediment to the conversion of America. The choice of the word Crusade to describe our mission is no accident. The life of man upon earth is a warfare declared Holy Job (Job 7:1). St. Paul admonishes us to arm ourselves with spiritual weapons to fight the enemies of our souls (Eph. 6:11-17). While every Catholic is called upon to fight the world, the flesh, and the devil, our battle also engages them specifically in the forces of the Revolution 1 ,many of which have entered the very precincts of the Church.
Our methods are threefold: personal sanctification, education, and works of the apostolate.
For Religious members, personal sanctification comes by way of our prayer life, our Marian Total Consecration, and living the vows and virtues of the religious life. Our Third Order members also live the Marian Total Consecration, and are joined to the congregation by simple promises.
Our educational work takes place in several ways. One is the Saint Augustine Institute, a program of continuing Catholic education which has the goal of forming apostles to work for the conversion of America. Another is the running of primary and secondary schools (such as Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Richmond, New Hampshire). We believe very strongly that one must be a reservoir before he can be an aqueduct. For this reason, we promote continuing study of the Faith as one way to spread it.
As religious, the works of our apostolate include the publishing of books, pamphlets, and our quarterly journal, From the Housetops. We reach out to the man on the street with our publications by distributing them door-to-door in an effort to spread the faith. Another very important aspect of our apostolate is the work of fostering Catholic community life. At St. Benedict Center in Richmond, our religious brothers and sisters work with Third Order members and other faithful to build and maintain a thriving Catholic culture. The community provides both an atmosphere conducive to wholesome family life and a hub of missionary activity to convert this nation.
