  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hypothetical to get a discussion going.

You are in charge of the local chapter of your organization's charitable auxiliary. As part of it, you must procure food and supplies for the poor and needy in your community.

There's a local individual who is famous for being able to stretch a dollar. This person knows all the tricks and tips for saving money, not just on basics like food but also on things like clothes, school supplies, and toys. Having this person help you out would be a big deal, as it'd enable you to stretch your auxiliary's assets significantly.

This person is also openly Mormon.

Do you ask them for help? If not, then why?

You are posting in the World Religion Forum, remember? Why wouldn't we ask him? However, in my experience Mormons have their own auxiliaries for this purpose.

Yes, because I'm not a bigot.

No, because the person is likely busy with his own Mormon endeavors. Also the point of running a church charity is to get other Christians in that church actively involved.

It is? I thought charity was to help the needy

Feeding and clothing the hungry and the naked is more important than religious politics. As such their religion or lack thereof would be inconsequential to that particular task.

If it was a church run charity, then no. A non-church charity, then yes.

I agree with Hammster, because one of the purposes of a church-run charity is evangelism. Our evangelism would be at cross-purposes with the hypothetical "openly Mormon" person in the OP.
What if that were the opportunity needed to witness to this "openly Mormon" person?

We're now deep into the land of hypotheticals. Is this "openly Mormon" person himself evangelizing?
The OP asked if they would seek this thrifty "openly Mormon's" help in procurring some things. How is that being unequally yoked? There is no binding agreement or contract to be "yoked" to. Asking for help is not being yoked to someone in the Biblical sense. Insert atheist, gnostic, muslim, etc. instead of Mormon. Does that change your answer?

I think procuring things would be fine.
