Hypocrisy
Hypocrisy goes hand in hand with pride, and as such is commonly found among the prominent. Thus Jesus said of the religious elite of his day, "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy." Luke 12:1 And said to such people, "on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness." Mt 23:28
Thus to avoid the trappings of hypocrisy in carrying out religious duties Jesus instructed, "when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full." Mt 6:2 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full." Mt 6:5 For Jesus is not impressed with words and deeds if one has ulterior motives. Jesus observed, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: ’These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.'" Mark 7:6
Hypocrites tend to see in others what they themselves are guilty of but not willing to face. Hypocrisy is quite easy to spot in others. So rather than having others point out your hypocrisy, buy a mirror. When you criticize others, consider whether in some measurable way you may be guilty of the very thing of which you accuse others.
