I was actually raised as a conservative Lutheran and I used to think that hymns were the only songs worthy of God. I discovered contemporary Christian music about 2 years ago and that is pretty much all that I listen to. We are actually trying to find a Lutheran church with a good contemporary worship service in our area. They are very hard to come by.

Good luck with that. I don't know that I've ever heard of a contemporary Lutheran service. No offense to Lutherans.

We were actually going to a contemporary service at one point and it was very moving. We were clapping our hands and actually singing songs written in the last century (Michael W. Smith, etc.) Some of the old people complained and it went away. What they say about Lutherans not liking change is SO true. We will keep on trying though.

I love praise and worship music, I love alot of the older hymns, I think my kids would rather listen to p&w though, they are young. I think the praise and worship music is a great way to get the attention of the younger crowd, especially the ones who dont know the Lord.Just my thought though.

Have a friend going to Concordia Seminary in St. Louis this fall thinking there are things in Lutheranism that need to change! I don't know exactly what they are; we haven't been able to have that discussion.

well, i think both are great... but it really bothers me how much this current generation hates hymns... hymns have so much more depth than most P&W... they actually say profound things about God, rather than, 'i love you, i love you, i love you" that gets kinda shallow after a while... kinda self centered...

I agree with brandontmilan. Some of today's younger crowd have no knowledge of a number of the traditional gospel hymns. It's sad.

Remember it is the older generation who was commissioned to pass on their faith. And to be practical, the vast majority of kids today do not understand hymns (Not drawing a conclusion on that statement). To tell kids that hymns are "better" is wrong and to say "p&w" is "better" is equally wrong. They need each other just as we wouldnt be where we are without the faith of those before us.

I do like the combination of both and we do have both at my church home. It is about 70% contemporary and 30% traditional.

We on occassion have something for doctrinal purist who like hyms called, "Hymn Sing" which I have attended each one. I love the doctrinal richness of hymns that P&W seems to lack. However, I like the livliness of P&W which promotes joy in praise. So the emotion and cerberal are both fed to the soul.

Isn't worship of the King soooo wonderfully diverse?

I'm more inclined towards some eclectic stuff. The mainstream "P&W" stuff is a complete turn-off - too much baggage and association with narrow evangelicalism in my past.

I like the stuff produced by the Iona Community, and by Taizé. In some respects, some of the best worship experiences are when the choir sings (Palestrina anyone?) and leaves the congregation to their own private communion with God.
