Started this free course today from Covenant Worldwide : History of Hymns

I'm making notes as I listen, here's one about the hymn, "Solid Rock."

"
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name."

- sweetest frame means a state of emotional being, Ward is saying you cannot trust your emotional state, only Jesus Christ

I don't know how many times I've sang that song and never thought about it. It makes perfect sense. Trust Christ not your emotions.

The paper at the end of the lecture series looks like fun. Find all the info you can about one of your favorite hymns including, stories, etc. and do a line by line exposition of it. The speaker also recommended using the AV and Strong's to find the meaning and use of old words in
these classic hymns.

This is what I'll be working on at 5:30am for the next week or so. I'm excited about it.

We use " Great Hymns of the Faith", not a very good one but we also use a publication of the weekly hymns that Don writes set to the tunes of the hymns in our hymnal.

I own several hymnals. I have the Trinity I told you of, an old Gobal, two or three of the Old School Hymnals 9&10, and others that are Methodist and general hymnals. I also have a few books on hymnology with the history of hymns. I collect hymnals a little. ;)

Last night I got to looking around my collection of books and found I own Lutheran Worship, Majesty Hymns along with my Gadsby's. I forgot I had them.

Anyone against modern tunes? Is it wrong to use guitar and drums during worship?

It seems to be an issue with Fundie's and Fundie Presbyterians then Calvinists and Reformed in general.

I strongly favor instrumental accompaniment that does not overpower the singing, if there is to be instrumental accompaniment. Most organs, as well as percussion instruments, tend to be overpowering.

I also favor musical notation so that the congregation can sing in harmony rather than in unison.

These are personal preferences as there is, admittedly, no scriptural backing for them. Then, there is no scriptural backing for congregational singing, either.

7b's, thanks for the reply. I kind of agree about the human voice not being overpowered by instruments. Not for biblical reasons...just personal taste. It seems like a delicate subject with Reformed folks but I don't think we can crytalize our worship songs to a certain musical influence or culture.

gord, that's what I do. I'll play along on the banjo from time to time but mostly read the words, think about them and recall scripture to mind on the subject.

Does you church still use a hymnal?

Do you own a hymnal and use it at home?

Which one(s)?

The Church I attend occasionally uses a combination of hymnal, handout (included in the bulletins), and a large projection screen for worship. There is a choir and sometimes with bells. The organ is impressive.

I have one hymnal, the Trinity Hymnal, well two if you count the Psalms and Hymns of Issac Watts...but technically it's not a hymnal like you would find in a Church pew.
