Old news.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Curry

Dr. Curry explained in October of 2007 that he had not intended to present these predictions as a scientific theory. Bravo had comissioned him to write an essay about the future of human evolution, which they then took out of context by summarizing it into a news release to make it look as though it were factual science[5].

The popular press ran a story over the weekend about the eventual split into two species of the human race. The sources cited were the preeminent London School of Economics and the work of Professor Oliver Curry. The story published as scientific fact is rebuked by Dr. Curry and this article explains how it all happened.

Was he paid for this?

If so, and if I were to pay a prominent doctor to to write an essay about the future of [anything], and he wrote something non-factual, I'd make sure he was all over the news.

And he was. He put himself in the news and came out and explained that the media published something that was not meant to be an actual supported hypothesis as if it was. He came out and said that he was paid to write fiction and that is what he delivered.

It was the press that took it out of context and Bravo that misrepresented it.

Kind of like creationists quote mining.

Well how can anything predicted about the future especially about a subject as complex as human society/genetics as far forward as 100,000 years not be considered non-factual? He was given an idea and told to flesh it out using his knowledge for entertainment purposes (Bravo is an entertainment channel). Personally I think the guy was a lazy sod and basically ripped of H G Wells.

I dont like the future

This article sound highly speculative to me. I don't see any reason why I should believe his speculations.

When I first read it my expressions were :

"Those evolutionists with their speculations"

lolz when i reed stupid creationist articles my expressions are

"This is batshit insane, who comes up with this [wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth]"

As opposed to somewhat normal creationist articles my expressions are

"This is batshit insane, who comes up with this [wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth]"

Ha, you saw what I did there?

Given how the isolation in human populations is little to none, it seems unlikely that there will be occasion for there to be speciation while mankind remains on Earth. Consider, for a moment, that 100,000 years is ten times the age of human civilization. Given how much civilization has changed in the past, and given that the rate of change is accelerating, it seems manifestly unlikely that any two populations of humans will remain isolated for long enough to speciate.

Now, in that time, it seems rather likely to me that we will be a different species, in that a modern human would probably be unable to produce viable offspring (absent technological help) with a human 100,000 years from now, but that's a bit different.

I don't think it will take 100,000 years, I think we're getting started about now:

(I'll call those alles 'genes', sounds better to me)

Genetic Engineering fixes some inherited defects

Some other genes get fixed, like the one that should make vitamin C

Designer genes: some enhancements get made

New man: build chromosome from scratch, put in these fixes:

1. Get the spine right so it looks like we were meant to walk upright from the start and we don't get lumbar and neck problems.

2. Eliminate the appendix

3. Move the vagina forward a few cm to in front of the pubic bone

4. Flow through lungs like birds have,

5. Use code from Squid to get our eyes made the right way around

And a redesigned chromosome may be immune to most or all known viruses

We would be improving ourselves,

and we would be replacing ourselves ...

Well, I think we're going to start modifying our genome quite soon. It'll probably start with disease resistance, where, for example, we'll take existing genes that confer resistance to, say, AIDS or heart disease, and spread them throughout the population. Once we get comfortable with that, I think we'll start affecting our own evolution by creating a tremendous database of peoples' genomes, and cross-reference that database with a wide variety of statistics. From this we could find genes that make people more intelligent, that make people kinder, that make back problems less of an issue, or whatever is desired.

Now, 100,000 years is one hell of a long time in human standards, so in that time it seems more than plausible that we will have graduated to the point where instead of just taking existing modifications and spreading them around, we'll be able to design the modifications ourselves. But I don't think any of us could say currently what those modifications would be.

Going for true hermaphrodites, for example, would definitely be a positive step forward in terms of equality. But it's such a large change to how we interact socially that it may just be too much of a change for people to go through. Who knows? Maybe it will happen, in one country, and that will be the cause of human speciation?
