• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

see about making yourself an emergency mental health first-aid kit. include a list of soothing things. distract yourself, until you are in a wise mind state, so that you can focus. practice. practice finding ways to manage, and help yourself. i am bipolar, but i have learned how to manage my moods. boy does it help everyone! :D need any ideas?

if you like art, you can decorate a box, or like me, i bought a special back pack. i kept my markers, paper, pictures, stuff animal, bible, medical safety plans, phone numbers to crisis center and phy unit. church, friend, parents and med info. some candy and journal.

 keep your kit in the place you use to keep things to hurt yourself.

I have a box that I call "My happy box". In in I keep things like, helpful bible verses, a list of 10 things that i am thankful for, phone numbers of people who know about my SI and I feel safe calling before I cut, caring notes from my friends, a cd I burned of my favourite *non-triggery* songs, and a notebook to journal in. I add things when i think of them. I have used it a few times, and it helps a little. It helps me to keep distracted, but my problem with it is that I have used it so many times now that I have memorized everything in it, and it doesn't seem to effect me anymore. :sigh:

take a shower or a bath!
(it helps me anyways, probs cos I'm a completel clean freak and feel sick without shower like 2 or 3 times a day neways! lol :p )

perfect  thing to add to a list for some people  ... the list that goes in the box. that way when you are in crisis you got something to remind you and side track you into better things... then before you know it you'll have a healthier control. practice practice practice! :groupray:

The box thing sounds like a great idea. I dont self harn now but it would have been helpful I'm sure when I was selfharming
Penguin
 and now you can share what things did help you?!

I have an "emergency" bag- primarily has stuff in to kinda keep my hands and mind busy, particularily if something has triggered the urge-
I have-
a colouring book (suprisingly soothing!)
coloured pencils
a cuddly toy
a couple of prayer cards
holding cross
book of bible promises
notebook
an mp3 player with worship music on, to help keep me focused on Jesus rather than the urge to self harm.
a 'passion for life' easter tract

my bible is not in the emergency kit but is usually next to my bed.

and im currently making up a book with transcripts of all the supportive text messages my best friend has sent me to keep in my kit bag.

Just some ideas....

ETA- I also now have a set of Anglican prayer beads in there, I dont have a set mantra of prayers or anything, but counting the beads through my fingers whilst praying through a trigger can be soothing and helps keep my hands busy and me focused on the Lord :)

I just wanted to share some more advice about an emergency bag- I was tempted at first to put a lot of different things in 'activity'-wise, but then thought better of it as in the moment when you are fighting the urge and all you're trying to do is not to be overtaken by the desire/need to cut/injure, too much choice may in fact be overwhelming in the midst of a stressful situation. So, just 'go easy' on how much you put in activity-wise to start with, IMHO.
My personal 'strategy' is Pray, breathe, Pray, read scripture, colour, and keep praying.

and...thankyou for the welcome :)

A person on a crisis line that I called once told me to put a bare ice cube against my skin instead of self-harming. She said the "shock" from the cold would be just as satisfying as actually self-harming myself. Now, I honestly didn't think this would work for me (and still don't) so I tried one of her other suggestions (can't remember what it was) and that worked but if the ice cube thing can help anyone else out then my posting it here has done it's job.
